FOOTBALL Golesh Quick Quotes and Notes 8/7

Today was practice 5 this morning, it has been really good. Been smart with water breaks and the structure of practice (heat). Competition everywhere and young guys coming out of their shell now. Heavy installation still. They will scrimmage on Thursday and start making position moves and setting depth charts after that.

Attitude and effort has been really positive.

On who has jumped out so far, he came in with an open mind, offensively, Tyreek Kelly is a young guy they've been excited and Khafre Brown (Chaf-ree) has been a guy who really excited him that they didn't see in the spring coming off an injury. Sean Atkins is a guy who has played a bunch of football, but is now an older guy.

The RB room is good and deeper than they thought. Donovan Jennings they are seeing for the first time has been exciting as has Mike Lofton who is taking some giant steps. The TE room is deep and has been exciting.

Defensively, he thought they had depth on the edge rushing the passer and they've been exciting to watch. Been awesome to have Rashad Cheney back out there and he is a leader and he didn't practice like Jennings.

They moved around a lot of guys in the secondary and it has been great to have Matt Hill back. Logan Berryhill has taken a bunch of steps forward. Ben Knox has really stood out. They didn't go as much in the spring, those are the names that stand out to him.

Golesh said they spent the first five days teaching them how to practice without pads on. That is a constant learning curve, really elite teams know how to practice and take care of each other. You've got to be able to get your work in. They will be amped up to hit and put the pads on. Both sides of the ball OL/DL physicality stepped up and they know assignments that they didn't in the spring and are going in the right direction.

Golesh on the injury, it was a precautionary only. They will know more this afternoon, they cut practice short after he went down. They cut it 10 minutes short, hope it will be alright. Golesh said they feel okay after talking to the doctors. Didn't say who was the guy who went down.

Golesh said the OL started off slow and picked up in practice 3, 4 and 5. In what they do it is hard to play fast with what they do until you are confident in assignments. Donovan is big there because he knows what it should look like. Mike Lofton has done a great job at center, they moved him there and he has taken charge there to get them lined up and to the right guys. RJ Perry has had his best camp. Derrell Bailey has shown a ton of growth. Deonte Bowie who came in via JUCO through spring was trying to figure it out, he has taken steps. Zane Herring who got here this summer has put a ton of work in and the assistant OL guys have got him ready at guard. He can play guard (repped both LG and RG) and center. Donovan has played guard and tackle. Andrew Kilfoyl has taken a bunch of steps. It has been really encouraging. Cole Skinner is a young guy that is pushing for the two-deep along with Nikola Milovac. They've gelled and taken a step from an attitude and physicality standpoint and are being more like Coach Hoodie.

Golesh recruiting Zane at UCF and he was interested and uninterested quickly after with them, they reconnected via Ephi Levy who was at FSU when they recruited Herring when he went in the portal. He played a ton of football and he had a bunch of options and his connection with Hoodie and himself helped and he has fit right in. He is easygoing, he came here to take a job. He has elite feet and is big and powerful and what they are looking for.

Dominic Gonella was an interesting addition, we lost a back in the portal and they were trying to figure out what they were going to do. They had depth with Kelley Joiner and Mikey Dukes and at that time you didn't know much else. They got Nay'Quan Wright who has been as advertised. Dom called and said four years of Fargo he was ready to come home. He was going to leave in the spring and summer to play baseball. He had been with the Diamondbacks org, but he loves football, he has played a ton of football and two years ago played a lot. He wanted the culture to come in and help USF. He knows what a winning culture is and winning. Golesh has added maturity to that room and is competing for PT now. The RB is physical in pass pro and they've been really intentional and Dom is a big part of that.

Immanuel Hickman is in that Dom mold, he is mature beyond his years guy, really thought out in his actions and how he approaches work. We talked about him gaining weight and playing inside and outside for us and he has. He started at ECU and he has respect for Coach Houston and how that program was built. He brings that.

Golesh only wants guys who add to the culture, he doesn't want guys who pull from the culture. They are all his guys, but the guys they are bringing in and the guys who chose to stay are seeing the type of dudes they brought in. Hickman loves to be coached and works hard. He has been great and will play inside and outside.

Zach Perkins is competing on the OL like crazy at the guard sport he has taken steps and he is a huge body and he is getting his body right. Zach is mature and is on the right bodies to block.

On how he plans to use the TEs in the offense, he loves them and they've paid his bills for a long time. It is a cool group of guys like Jayson Littlejohn who is a JUCO guy that didn't play a lot of football but is athletic and fast and roll, gives you multiplicity. Weston Wolff can do the same thing play on the edge or in the box and Gunnar Greenwald is a grizled vet, more of a box guy but has done a ton on the perimeter and he has gotten stronger and faster. Those three guys they feel like give them the ability to create matchups to play in 12 and 13 personnel and change up pictures. Having three ready to roll, allows you to build formations. Colin Affleck is a walk-on that has shown flashes and Teigan Martin transferred in and he wasn't healthy until a couple of weeks ago and he has shown flashes. Gerard Edimo, the young guy they signed late, it is hard on them, but he thinks he will be as special as they come. They tell him not to jinx him. He may be able to help them this year at some point as he grows physically. It is as deep a room as he has coached since Iowa State. They are unique and different and allow you to be flexible offensively.

FOOTBALL Transfer Portal

If it's OK if I start a thread now for some outgoing players. I'd like to make a list though of some players I'd like to stay around though beforehand.

Offense top 5
Battie - best RB on the team, reliable, good kid. Good in KO return. Holdover from CCS.
Weaver - best WR on the team at the moment, could get a big offer from elsewhere but seems to like USF. Holdover from CCS.
Horn - probably the most naturally talented player on the roster, would be pleasantly surprised if he stays.
Greenwald - highly rated kid, lots of p5 interest out of HS, has played a decent amount now as a soph, best ceiling at TE
Bohanon - Depends on the system the new coach wants to run, but he provides a good solid floor and has the experience.
Honorable mentions: Kwan Powell, Yusuf Terry (personal favorite, starter), Dustyn Hall

Defense top 5
Vaughn - I told everyone in a thread before the year I thought he would be pretty good and would start at USF this year. Sack leader. CCS holdover.
Kelly - has played a lot as a freshman, he needs some work but could be really good in the future with support.
Cheney - our best DT by a good margin, has the size that we've lacked since his injury.
Curry - I'm a little biased on this one, he's one of my 3 favorite players on the team, currently rated as 3rd best db on the team per pff. CCS Holdover.
Aamaris Brown - pretty clearly the best corner on the roster and still a young player, could become a true cover corner.
Honorable mentions: Daunte Hunter, Jonathan Ross, Mac Harris ( personal favorite, best PFF linebacker)

HOOPS RECRUITING Two local standouts visit USF

I spoke to Blake HS Coach Fred Lewis and he said that his son, 2025 wing Joshua and teammate 2026 forward Joe Philon took an unofficial visit to USF on Tuesday.

They watched the team workout, toured the basketball facility, met the staff, sans CAAR who was not on campus that day, and saw some of the campus.

They were unable to get a tour of Yuengling Center because it was being set up for AEW wrestling.

Fred Lewis played three seasons for the Bulls (1989-92). He appeared in 87 games, starting 27 and averaged 12.7 points on 56.0 percent shooting, 7.7 rebounds 1.6 assists over his career.

FOOTBALL Alex Golesh presser notes 8/1

Quick Quotes/Notes from Alex Golesh

Golesh said it has been a long 8 months and they are working hard on that. They attacked the roster and tried to fill as many gaps as they could through recruiting. They kept an open mind through spring evaluating and moving kids around. They created competition through that. 38 new scholarship guys and 49 new players including walk-ons. One more addition later this week that is finishing up school at his old place.

New bodies means they have to figure where they can help them.

Third thing was setting up the culture and the accountability and building on a day-to-day basis a winning culture, how they do everything every day, everything matters on and off the field. They carved a huge chunk out of the deficit he walked into.

The big thing now is how do they handle adversity and that is what he wants to see in Fall Camp, they gave the players and the staff the tools to handle adversity, until they see it they won't know. They are going to make it hard, but also want to keep them healthy. He is using science to help with that last part.

It's time to go to work. No more social media, it is work time.

What does success look like in year one, to him, he defines that in how he handles adversity and how do they handle it when it goes well and when it doesn't. They are laying the foundation of a program where they will win championships, but it is the foundation and they are still laying that down. They will find out early on if they are any good or not and how they handle that with the schedule.

There is really good competition at RB, TE and on the OL and as much as they've seen at WR. He is excited about the WR room and they have a chance to be really good. The DL they have new guys, the edges are good, the interior has to get better. At LB there is a lot of competition they want to see it play out. They added pieces at DB, got some guys healthy, how do they get their best 5 on the field back there. CTO does a good job of packaging defense. They have 6-7 guys who feel like starters as they package out for WKU. Kicker will be competition and punter and a freshman long snapper that will compete.

7 days of practice, scrimmage on the 8th and he is working to set up a place to scrimmage because he wants to be able to operate like a game day with the coaches in the press box and they will practice 3 more then scrimmage on 12 and then they will have an idea of depth. They'll have a mock game week to get ready for WKU and then a regular game week prep for that game. The focus is on getting the kids ready.

The staff prepared a base game plan for WKU in June. The team are moving into the Embassy Suites for 11 days, taking away car keys to get guys focused.

HOOPS A couple of MBB nuggets

Summer workouts are ending this week and players are headed home for a few weeks before they'll return for fall workouts and then the start of practice.

The coaches have spent all their time this summer on skill work with the players and strength and conditioning. They didn't do any installation of the offense nor did they start teaching their defensive principles.

Since he didn't commit until right around when Summer B classes began, David Ogunleye will report to USF later this month when the players return for the fall semester.

The Bulls will play an exhibition game against D2 Edward Waters on Thursday Nov. 2.

I posted that info yesterday in the South Florida announces 2023-24 MBB non-conference schedule thread.

Since nobody commented on it, I think it probably buried by everybody's interest in Alex Golesh's presser.

In April, Edward Waters hired Cabral Huff as its new men's basketball coach. Huff comes to Jacksonville after a three-year stint at NAIA Voorhees University. USF played Voorhees in an exhibition game on Nov. 1, 2021.

The exhibition game against EWU has not been announced by USF but it is likely to be free to the public but only available via the Bulls Unlimited channel on iHeart Radio.

HOOPS RECRUITING USF in pursuit of 5️⃣⭐ wing

Amir Abdur-Rahim has let consensus five-star Karter Knox know that he is going to recruit him to USF hard.

USF offered Knox, the No. 10 ranked overall prospect in the 2024 class, on June 16, 2022 and Abdur-Rahim made it known to the 6-foot-6 wing that the offer by the previous Bulls staff still stands.

"He's been talking to Karter and he likes Karter and Karter likes the new coach. Don't think that Karter isn't watching closely how Amir treats his brother," Kevin Knox I told BullsInsider.com.

To people who will think the Kobe Knox recruitment was to help get deeper in the mix with Karter, his father had this to say, "It's not about Karter Knox. Think about it, he needs to win now. I mean, he just signed a contract. But still, you want to win now. And like he said [about Kobe], your film and the percentages in what you did you allow us to win now."

USF will be battling with some heavy hitters to get a commitment from Karter Knox. Kentucky (Calipari made a school visit last month), Louisville, Kansas and Arkansas are heavy in the mix as are several other programs including Florida State, his parents' alma mater.

Could USF be a long-shot to land Karter Knox? Maybe, but it's not completely outside the realm of possibility.
