BASEBALL USF Baseball Advances to AAC Tournament Semifinal with Win Over Charlotte

The Bulls came from three runs down to defeat the 49ers, face ECU Saturday

CLEARWATER, FLA., MAY 23, 2025
- The No. 3-seeded South Florida Bulls (31-24; 16-11 American) came from three runs down to knock off the No. 2-seed Charlotte 49ers (36-22; 18-9 American), 7-6, Friday night at BayCare Ballpark to advance to the semifinals of the 2025 American Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament.

The Bulls will make their fourth AAC Tournament semifinal appearance in 11 tournaments Saturday when they take on No. 6-seed East Carolina. The second meeting between the Bulls and Pirates in the 2025 tournament will take place at approximately 12:30 p.m., following the conclusion of Saturday’s first semifinal match-up between No. 1-seed UTSA and No. 5-seed Tulane.

On Friday, the Bulls trailed 5-2 after three innings but used a three-run fourth and two runs in the eighth for the come-from-behind win. As he did on Wednesday, Austin Newton came on in relief for the Bulls, one of four USF pitchers to see action on the day, and got the win. Newton gave up one run on two hits while pitching the final four innings.

Rafael Betancourt went 2-for-4 and drove in the two go-ahead runs in the eighth.

The 49ers jumped to the lead in the bottom half of the first inning, collecting three runs on four hits off Bulls’ starter Corey Kling.

USF responded in the second, getting on the board when Lance Trippel doubled down the left field line and scored Marcus Brodil, who was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Walks issued to Jackson Mayo and Bradke Lohry loaded the bases with one out and forced a Charlotte pitching change. The Bulls got one more run on a walk issued to Carlos Jacome before Charlotte got out of the jam with a 3-2 lead.

Back-to-back home runs by Charlotte in the bottom of the third increased the 49ers lead to three again, 5-2.

Bulls sophomore Carter Murphy hit his first home run of the season over the left-center field wall with one out in the top of the fourth. With two out, Matt Rose singled to left and drove in Jacome, who reached for the second time on the day with a single. Brodil then launched a 3-2 slider off the centerfield wall for a double that scored Rose and tied the game, 5-5.

The Bulls first two batters reached to start the eighth as Ryan Pruitt walked and Rose was hit by a pitch. After a pitching change, Brodil walked to load the bases with no outs and Betancourt gave USF a 7-5 lead with a two-run single up the middle.

Charlotte got one more with a solo home run to lead off the ninth before Newton shut the door, striking out the final two 49ers batters.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING The race is on for Rinaldo Callaway III

Everyone was sort of a little shocked when he committed to USF and now he has blown up this spring with tons of coaches coming through Macon to take a look at the dynamic pass rusher. Callaway has set up OVs starting next week with Rutgers, followed by Kentucky, Tulane and then USF gets the final OV.

Rutgers and UK are coming very strong after him from what I've heard.

USF Football’s Season-Opening Clash With Boise State Set For 5:30 PM Kickoff on ESPN

Bulls and Broncos will meet at Raymond James Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 28

TAMPA, FLA., May 13, 2025 – The 2025 South Florida Football Season presented by Tampa General Hospital will kick off in an ESPN nationally-televised clash with Boise State on Thursday, Aug. 28 at 5:30 p.m. in Raymond James Stadium, ESPN and the American Athletic Conference announced today.

The South Florida clash with Boise State will lead off two marquee games on ESPN on Aug. 28. Nebraska will take on Cincinnati in Kansas City, Mo. in a 9 p.m. kickoff on ESPN that evening. The kick times for the games were announced live on ESPN’s Up Front show on Tuesday among several Week 0 and Week 1 marquee games being broadcast on ESPN and ABC.

The 2025 season-opening clash will mark the first-ever meeting between South Florida and Boise State, which went 12-2 last year, won the Mountain West Championship, and earned a spot in the first 12-team College Football Playoff.

USF will face possibly the toughest non-conference schedule in program history with three games slated against teams in The Athletics’ “Way too Early Top 25”, including No. 11 Florida, No. 15 Miami and No. 21 Boise State. The Bulls have never faced three Associated Press Poll-ranked teams in the non-conference slate. USF has only faced two twice, doing so last year in taking on No. 4 Alabama and No. 8 Miami and in 2022. If preseason rankings hold, it will mark the sixth straight season the Bulls have faced at least one ranked opponent in the non-conference slate and 17 of the last 20.

The Bulls' other non-conference game dates were previously announced. South Florida will travel to play at Florida on Saturday, Sept. 6, and at Miami on Saturday, Sept. 13, before returning to Tampa to face South Carolina State on Saturday, Sept. 20, in Raymond James Stadium. South Florida will begin American Athletic Conference play with back-to-back Friday night, showcase games. USF will open play in The American vs. Charlotte on Friday, Oct. 3 in Raymond James Stadium before a Friday night road game at North Texas on Friday, Oct. 10. See the Bulls’ complete 2025 schedule HERE.

South Florida’s third season under Head Coach Alex Golesh will feature four weeknight showcase games on the year, including three in Raymond James Stadium. Kickoff times and television arrangements for the remainder of the Bulls 2025 schedule will be announced at a later date.

Up Next:

USF football will conduct summer workouts and fall camp before kicking off the 2025 season on Thursday, Aug. 28 vs. Boise State in Raymond James Stadium. The Broncos will be the first of potentially three preseason Top 25-ranked non-conference opponents for the Bulls, who will also play at Florida (Sept. 6) and at Miami (Sept. 13).

Pac 12 Re-Expansion

“Sources reporting that Boise State, Colorado state, San Diego State & Fesno state are being targeted to get added to the PAC 2

They will build a new western conference power conference & will be adding two more schools to get to the minimum 8..”

Can I just say… get us the **** out of this conference!! Things are beginning to look really bleak for us. USF just got passed by these G5s now as their contract will be stronger than AAC

Loads to unpack here. Does USF try to go & add itself to the new look PAC before it’s too late? Or would paying its exit fees and enlisting in a western conference be a death blow when future expansion comes from the ACC & USF can no longer move?

Another thing is what becomes of the MWC scraps? Air Force for example now looks like it’s on an island, why wouldn’t AAC add them at this point. Perhaps this opens a whole new round of expansion

CFP….what a farce…

I hope everyone will see this year how ridiculous a 12 team playoff is in FBS college football and it will be even worse if we go to 16. There is to much money in college football and the top 8-12 programs have most the money and decided advantage. The first four games were all blowouts and the sad part is the way it is set up is next year the games in the next round are OSU v Oregon, ND v UGA, PSU v Boise, and Texas v ASU. The sad part is the 4 best teams right now will be forced to face one another in the quarters….Boise and ASU have no business and will get exposed…but sadly we’ll lose two of the best teams in the quarters because of all this ignorant yammering for inclusion…the truth is, and what I have been saying for years, at most in any given year only 6-8 teams have a chance to win a title. ND, PSU, and Texas all lost key players the past day playing a useless game where only the ignorant didn’t know they would win handedly.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING Bulls Scoop 5/15 updates on top targets and OV season

What I'm calling the great reshuffling is taking place right now as teams have to make decisions on who they actually want to still visit after seeing kids this spring and how they have developed and how their rosters look post-Winter/Spring portal seasons.

Also the Bulls have lots of hunters trying to poach their commits. That is again a credit to the early scouting by Alex Golesh's staff and the ability to get on guys early.

American Football Championship Game To Be Televised On ABC For 11th Consecutive Season

Mark your calendars and clear the day

IRVING, Texas –
The 2025 American Conference Football Championship Game will be televised on ABC, as announced Wednesday by the conference and ESPN.

The 2025 Championship Game is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 5, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. The game will be played at the home stadium of the conference’s regular-season champion and will kick off ABC’s Championship Weekend, which also includes the title games from the Big 12, SEC and ACC.

ABC has televised the American Championship Game each year since the game’s inception in 2015. The first 10 championship games have drawn a combined television audience of more than 26 million viewers.

Last year’s American Championship Game was an historic event in prime time on ABC as Army captured its first conference title in program history with a 35-14 win against Tulane at Michie Stadium. The Black Knights went on to finish 12-2, leading a group of six American teams to win bowl games as the conference earned the Bowl Challenge Cup as the top-performing league in Bowl Season.

The American had three teams win at least 10 games last year (Army, Memphis, Navy), joining the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC as the only conferences with at least three 10-win teams. Army (No. 21) and Memphis (No. 24) were ranked in the final Associated Press top 25, giving the conference at least two ranked teams in the final poll seven times in the league’s first 12 seasons.
