Breaking: President Law announces she is stepping down

I am sure many of you received this earlier today.

---

Dear USF community,

When I was first asked to serve as the University of South Florida’s interim president in 2021, I thought it would only be for a few months to provide stability during a time of transition. I pledged to create a smooth glidepath for a new president to be well positioned for success. What I never could have imagined is where we would be three-and-a-half years later and all that we would accomplish. Together.

I have not lost sight of that commitment to create a glidepath, and the time is right for the next president to lead a new chapter of our university. I have informed our board chair, Will Weatherford, of my plans to step down after a national search is conducted and a successor is selected.

You might be wondering, why now? Our university is on an incredible trajectory, and the foundation is in place for a new leader to take us to even greater heights.
We are excelling as a proud member of the Association of American Universities.
Our research enterprise is stronger than ever with a record $738 million in funding last year.
Construction will soon ramp up on our transformational new on-campus stadium and the plan we have developed will keep it on track to open in 2027.
Our new College of Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity and Computing will open this fall.
We launched an Office of University Community Partnerships that is enhancing our impact throughout the Tampa Bay region and beyond.
We established a new single-year fundraising record with over $168 million and received gifts from an all-time high of more than 54,000 donors last year.
We have set new records for state legislative funding, including major increases in recurring operational dollars and support for other key projects.
We have earned national recognition as a best place to work.
We implemented a transparent and predictable budget model and became more modern and efficient with our business operations.
One of the hallmarks of great leadership is knowing when it is time to create space for new ideas and fresh perspectives to build on the momentum we have created. I am confident in the path ahead and inspired by the potential of what is to come.

During my tenure we established bold goals — and thanks to our talented, dedicated team of faculty, staff, administrators and students — we exceeded them, sometimes soaring beyond what many thought was possible. Each milestone we have reached is not a stopping point, but rather a steppingstone to the next level of excellence. There is no finish line.

I deeply appreciate your trust, support and shared commitment to our vision. Thank you to the Board of Trustees for your unwavering confidence in USF. And finally thank you to our alumni, donors, fans, community partners and other passionate supporters for helping elevate USF to places we have never been before.

After over 40 years as an employee, student, board member and chair, donor, volunteer and now president, I am filled with gratitude and pride for all we have achieved. Serving this community as USF’s eighth president has been the honor of my lifetime, and I look forward to cheering on the continued success of this incredible university. As I said when my tenure began, when we link arms and work together, anything is possible.

As always, and forever, Go Bulls!

Sincerely,

Rhea F. Law
President

USF Erases a 20-Point Deficit in a Thrilling Comeback Victory Against UTSA

USF tied the second-largest comeback in program history as Jimmie Williams recorded a career-high 16 points

SAN ANTONIO, Feb. 19, 2025 – Jimmie Williams recorded a career-high 16 points as the University of South Florida men’s basketball team erased a 20-point deficit in the second half against UTSA on Wednesday. The Bulls (13-14, 6-8) had five players finish in double digits in the 78-73 victory over the Roadrunners (10-16, 4-10) in San Antonio.

The 20-point comeback tied the second-longest in program history, matching last season’s 20-point comeback at No. 10 Memphis on Jan. 18, 2024. The largest comeback in program history is 25 against Stony Brook in the 2019 CBI.

South Florida ended the game on an 18-2 run to win 78-73. The Bulls held the Roadrunners to just two points in the final 4:09 of regulation. Brandon Stroud led the Bulls in the final four minutes with six points, while Williams and Kobe Knox each added four points.

Williams produced a team-high 16 points, with three rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Jamille Reynolds and Knox both ended the game with 13 points. Knox collected seven rebounds while Reynolds had six. Stroud brought down a career-high 17 rebounds to go along with 11 points, a career-high five steals, a career-best four blocks, and three assists. Jayden Reid rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.

After the Bulls scored the game's first four points, the Roadrunners scored 10 unanswered and took a 10-4 lead. Later in the first half, UTSA added a 7-0 run and took a 40-29 lead into the half.

Midway through the second half, UTSA extended its lead to 20, 65-45, its largest of the game. The Bulls continued to battle. Jimmie Williams knocked down two 3-pointers, and Quincy Ademokoya added a 3-pointer, as USF cut the deficit to 11, 65-54.

Key Stats:

• South Florida ended the game on an 18-2 run to win 78-73. The Bulls held the Roadrunners to just two points in the final 4:09 of regulation.

• With the 20-point comeback, USF tied the second-longest comeback in program history. It is the second-straight season the USF has erased a 20-point deficit.

• The USF bench outscored the UTSA bench 33-9. It is the 21st time the South Florida bench has outscored their opponent’s bench this season.

Notables:

• Jimmie Williams recorded a career-high 16 points.

• CJ Brown has recorded a steal in his 12th straight game. He has the longest streak by a USF player, surpassing David Collins with 11 in 2012.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING Powell Promoted to USF Football Director of On- Campus Recruiting

Powell was part of team that helped secure last two recruiting classes ranked among the best outside of the autonomous four conferences

TAMPA, FLA., FEB. 19, 2025 – University of South Florida Football Head Coach Alex Golesh has announced the promotion of Ryland Powell to director of on-campus recruiting.

“Ryland has been a big part of our success in recruiting over the last two years, has a tremendous work ethic, and has been integral in elevating the manner in which we host prospects on our campus to an elite level,” Golesh said. “I’m excited to see her take the next step in her career and lead our on-campus recruiting.”

Powell, who enters her third season with the program in 2025, has served as the assistant director of on-campus recruiting the last two years helping USF secure classes in 2024 and 2025 that both ranked among the very best outside the autonomous four conferences. USF’s 2024 class was ranked No. 1 in the American Athletic Conference and among all non-autonomous four conference teams, while the 2025 class was ranked second among both.

USF welcomed 40 new Bulls this year, including 27 members of the 2025 Recruiting Class and 13 transfer portal additions.

In 2024, USF capped its second-straight winning season with a second-straight bowl victory, downing San Jose State 41-39 in a five-overtime thriller in the Hawai’i Bowl on Dec. 24. The Bulls are one of just 15 teams to have posted a bowl or College Football Playoff win in each of the past two seasons and the only one to have scored 40 or more points in each of those victories.

Up Next:

The Bulls open spring practice on March 25 with the annual USF Pro Day following on March 26. The USF Spring Game is set for April 26at Corbett Stadium on the USF campus.

We need to make sure we understand that in life, mistakes happen. But there are also certain moments where mistakes can't happen. And tonight, we stole that moment from [Shannon] and that's on us and something that we have apologized to him for, apologized to his mom. We want to make sure that we apologize to our fans and everybody who was excited to be a part of this experience tonight."

HOOPS Updated Candidates for USF Men Basketball Head Coaching Job

Don't throw hate at me, it's slow, and I'm finally starting to feel well enough to at least function at 85% so I'm just thinking of random things while watching last Night's Football game between the Ravens at Chargers, the battle of the Harbaugh brothers got me to thinking about head coaches. USF just so happens to have an opening at an important spot and at an important time.

Looks like we are in for another exciting season of CBB as it will be wide open again with some very good teams, great players, and up and coming coaches. That last statement is where USF comes in. I have 3 potential hires for USF to consider that has a chance to continue on the path that the late CAAR had started just over a year ago.

1) Current Interim HC Ben Fletcher
Pros: Fletcher was one of CAAR top assistant coaches for the last 5 seasons between Kennesaw and USF. Coach Fletcher has a familiarity with the culture here at USF, the administration, and with all the current players. Given that he was on staff already, he gets the first and best chance to impress the Administration and donors to make his case that he wants to be the Head Coach going forward, and will have a whole season to show what he is capable of doing. Seems to be genuinely liked by those who know him.

Cons: Ben Fletcher has no prior head coaching experience at any level. Ben Fletcher has no reputation as a bull dog recruiter, even though he has been a part of a decent level of talented players at Kennesaw and at USF. By having no prior experience as a Head coach, Ben Fletcher has not done anything outside of practice courts and player drills that a Head coach has to do, like interacting with administrators, donors, media, and all other ambassador like duties that the University requires of their coaches. Ben Fletcher does not have a track record to sell his vision on the future of USF hoops to prospects, administrators, or fans just yet.

2) Tom Crean
Pros: Large profile and Big reputation as a Head Coach. Known as Tom Izzo's best assistant coach that became a Head coach, Crean spent 4 seasons with the future HoF head coach at Michigan State. Been a Head coach at 3 high majors, Marquette, Indiana, and Georgia. Elite recruiter and talent evaluation that has helped Crean have a reputation of getting players to the NBA, thar includes Dwayne Wade, Steve Novak, Wesley Matthews, Victor Oladipo, Cody Zeller, and Anthony Edwards. Would bring instant credibility to the University of South Florida and be the highest profile head coach ever. Crean runs a high pace motion offense with lots of set plays and teaches proper fast breaking principles and pressure defense. Tom Crean Lives in Tampa or near Tampa so he would be at home. It is believed that Tom Crean has the fire in the belly again, that maybe if the right opportunity came he would get back into coaching. Crean should be extra energized to keep CAAR dreams alive for USF while being home at the same time. Should be able to entice all the top 100 level talent in the Tampa area to stay home. Would be able to raise more money for the program based on his profile alone. If he wins USF, he would not have a desire to seek a higher profile job.

Cons: 58 years old and has been out of coaching for a few years. Does the fire still burn?

3) Antoine Pettway
Pros: High Ceiling! Known as a tireless worker as a player at Alabama where he went from being a walk on an academic scholarship to earning an athletic scholarship, to being the starting PG on some exciting Crimson Tide basketball teams. Became an assistant coach on Alabama's staff starting with Anthony Grant and ending with Coach Nate Oaks for 12 years after spending 2 years as an assistant coach on the staff at Jacksonville State. Pettway quickly earned the reputation as an ACE recruiter and helped bring in and develop 8 NBA players. Pettway took over for CAAR at Kennesaw after he became the Head Coach at USF. Even after getting a late start and having to replace many of KSU best players, CAP recruited several young players including convincing a kid that was headed to Alabama to follow him. Pettway really showed his ability to recruit this past off-season by signing the #27th ranked class to play at Kennesaw. Pettway continues to prove that he is more than just a recruiter, despite having one of the youngest teams in the nation, his team just defeated a very talented #24 ranked Rutgers that features what many believe will be the #1 player that will be drafted in the upcoming NBA, Ace Bailey. Pettway and CAAR developed a strong relationship and he has dedicated this Kennesaw season in honor of CAAR. Pettway does a lot of the same things and interactions with fans that CAAR was so good at. Pettway is only 42 years old. If Pettway is successful at USF, he will likely be the Head Coach for a long time with only Alabama being able to lure him away which is not going to have an opening for years to come.

Cons: Timing. If ADMK is to get Pettway he will have to get him after the season, before his star gets too bright and large. CAAR had 1 winning season at KSU and the timing was perfect for USF, because they would not have gotten him any other time. Could the timing for USF to go shop at Kennesaw be lining up again?

Reynolds Records a Double-Double, But USF Men’s Basketball Falls to UAB

Jamille Reynolds recorded a career-high 27 points and tied a career-high with 14 rebounds

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Feb. 16, 2025 – Jamille Reynolds collected his seventh double-double for the University of South Florida men’s basketball team on Sunday against UAB. The Bulls (12-14, 5-8) fell in a hard-fought battle against the Blazers (16-9, 9-3) 85-78 inside Bartow Arena in Birmingham.

Reynolds tallied a game-high 27 points and tied a career-high with 14 rebounds. Jayden Reid added a 16-point performance with four assists, a game-high three steals, and two rebounds. Kobe Knox recorded his 15th game in double digits with 10 points tonight. CJ Brown dished out a game-high five assists. He had five or more assists for the third time in four games.

After the game started as a back-and-forth battle, UAB went on a 10-4 run and took a 24-19 lead midway through the first half. The Blazers extended their lead to 10, 47-37 at the half.

The Bulls opened the second half on a 9-3 run and cut the deficit to four, 50-46, with 16:00 left in regulation. Reynolds accounted for five of the team’s nine points. USF outscored UAB to cut the deficit to five points, 64-59. Reid knocked down a transition 3-pointer that forced a timeout from the Blazers. Reid recorded a steal and took it to the hoop to cut the deficit to 74-71.

UAB held a 79-71 lead with just a minute left in regulation. The Bulls continued to battle and scored five points in 11 seconds, making it a three-point game, 79-76. The Blazers closed out the game with an 85-78 victory.

Key Stats:

• Jamille Reynolds recorded his second game of 20 or more points and his seventh double-double. He finished the game with a career-high 27 points and tied a career-high 14 rebounds.

• The USF bench outscored the UAB bench 23-21. It is the 20th time the South Florida bench has outscored their opponent’s bench this season.

• UAB outrebounded USF 46-33, including 17 offensive rebounds. This led to a 17-6 edge in second-chance points.

Notables:

• CJ Brown has recorded a steal in his 11th straight game. It ties the longest streak by a USF player since David Collins in 2012.

• Jayden Reid has recorded 40 or more steals and 80 or more assists in his first two seasons at USF. The only other Bull was Anthony Collins in 2011-12 and 2012-13.

Up Next:

USF is back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 19, for a road matchup with UTSA. The Bulls and the Roadrunners will meet inside the Convocation Center in San Antonio, Texas. USF and UTSA will play on ESPN+ at 8 p.m. ET and can be heard on Bulls Unlimited.

HOOPS Mid-Major Check In (2/8)

The term "mid-major" has become all encompassing of schools that are not part of the P4+Big East, so here is a quick snapshot of the Top 100 of this group in NET Rankings. The bubble will be much smaller this year with 14 teams from the SEC currently ranked inside the Top 50 of the NET Rankings. Last year 8 mid-major teams received an at-large bid, while it was only 5 in 2023.
  • WCC a lock for 2 teams, but league could steal a 3rd bid if Santa Clara makes it the championship game or another team wins it outright (unlikely as top heavy as the WCC is this year)
  • Mountain West likely to only get 3 teams this year after flopping with 6 teams in last year's NCAAT
  • American likely a one-bid league unless Memphis doesn't win the conference tournament
  • A-10 could get 2 teams in with VCU and a George Mason team that has won 16 of its last 18 (2/22 match up looms large)
  • Unlikely Big West gets 2 teams in but have whoever doesn't win the conference tournament between UC-Irvine and UC-San Diego will have a good argument

Lock for NCAAT
12. Gonzaga (17-7)
24. St. Mary's (19-4)

Should Be In If They Don't Win Their Conference Tournament
37. VCU (18-5) - no Quad 1 wins
40. New Mexico (18-4) - 9-2 in Quad 1/2 games
41. Utah State (20-3)
44. Memphis (19-4) - 5-2 in Quad 1 games

On The Bubble
48. Boise State (16-7) - cannot afford any more losses; only 4-6 in Quad 1/2 games
50. San Diego State (14-5)
52. UC-San Diego (17-4)
54. Santa Clara (16-9) - cannot afford any more losses, but win at Gonzaga is elevating their profile
56. UC-Irvine (19-3) - gaudy record boosted by 4-1 record in Quad 1/2 games
58. Drake (19-2) - off to a better start than last year's NCAAT team
59. North Texas (14-6) - AAC is weak this year hurting chances
61. Oregon State (16-7)
64. San Francisco (18-6) - only 4-6 in Quad 1/2 games
68. McNeese (15-6) - 6 losses already and 1-4 in Quad 1/2 games makes NET ranking questionable

USF WBB 3OT Win vs Rice

Congrats to the USF women's hoop team who won a 3OT thriller last night at the YC. With 1.8 seconds left, Rice is in-bounding the ball under the USF basket, and up by 3. So what does Rice do? Throw the ball the length of the court, no one touches it, so it's USF ball under its basket with 1.8 seconds left. USF's Sammie Puissis drains a 3 from the corner to tie it headed to the first OT. USF ends up winning it by 5 in 3 OT. Worth viewing the highlights on the USF site.
