HOOPS USF Men’s Basketball Hosts West Georgia Friday Night

TAMPA, Fla. (November 14, 2024) – The University of South Florida men’s basketball team is back inside the Yuengling Center for a game with West Georgia on Friday, November 15. The Bulls (1-2) and the Wolves (0-3) are scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip on ESPN+. Breeze Airways is the sponsor of Friday’s game.

After the game, fans will have the opportunity to get postgame autographs on special posters.

Who Doesn’t Love “Kaso”

Kasen Jennings leads the team with 14.0 points per game and with seven made 3-pointers. Jennings has recorded at least 13 points in each of his first three games as a Bull. He is one of four players to record 13 or more points to start their USF career. Melvin Buckley (2005), Jahmal McMurray (2015), and Geno Thorpe (2016) are the three others.

Chef Boyar”Reid”

Through his first 36 games, Jayden Reid has tallied 114 and 46 steals. He is just one of six USF players to record 114+ assists and 45+ steals in their first 36 games. Reggie Kohn (1999), Anthony Collins (2011), and Laquincy Rideau (2018) are the others. He leads the 2024-25 squad with 14 assists.

Stout Long-Range Defense

The Bulls have held opponents to 22.9 percent from 3-point range. USF is 24th in the NCAA and is second in the AAC in 3-point defense. It is the second-lowest percentage since the 1996-97 season, only bested by the 21.3 percent last season.

Making it Count at the Line

The Bulls are tied for 101st in the country with a free-throw percentage of 74.4 and are fifth in the AAC. USF has made at least 70.0 percent of its free throws on at least 15 attempts in six straight games dating back to last season. That is the longest such streak for the Bulls since January 2011, with seven straight.

HOOPS Post Game: USF home win against UAPB(Good/Bad/Ugly)

GOOD
1. Milestone: Coach Ben Fletcher getting his 1st win as a Head Coach - congratulations coach

2. Disciplinarian: Coach Fletcher made Reynolds sit out this game and benched of Jayden Reid in the 2nd half, even if it meant USF would play without a PG. Coach Fletcher seems fully engaged in coaching this team and by benching 2 starters(1 for the entire game, and 1 for a large portion shows he is about the business of correcting and winning.) I like it and if they had loss, then the players have no one to blame but themselves.

3. The Veterans: Knox, Stroud, and Jennings played pretty well overall and were tough when the team needed them the most. Each scored in double digits and combined for only 4 turnovers. I know Jayden Reid is supposed to be the default team leader, but he' is not ready for that role just yet. More on him later.

4. The Students: What a turnaround the student section has made. The SoFlo Rodeo will turn up and turn out. If USF can get things rolling in the AAC, count on the SoFlo Rodeo making things very tough on opposing teams. CAAR would be proud of them.

BAD
1. Little Private: Jayden Reid has not not been the "Little General" he was hyped up to be just yet. He is supposed to be the new face of USF men Basketball and made preseason 3rd team AAC. Reid is really struggling shooting and making the right decisions on the court. As we know the PG position is the most important spot that determines wins and losses on a basketball team. USF is struggling to find consistency because Reid is struggling to find his own consistency. Reid came in shooting a horrific 28% from the field(20% on threes), 10 turnovers, and 7 asst. Tonight against one of the worst D1 teams in CBB, Jayden shot 16% from the field(25% on threes), and had 3 more turnovers. Reid has to vastly improve not only for USF to get better, but to keep freshman CJ Brown behind him.

2. Need a B12 shot: Once again USF is not improving after halftime. USF finished even with UAPB 35-35 in the second half tonight and has been outscored by 30 points in the previous two games. USF is having a hard time maintaining intensity and is lacking a game plan on how to attack on offense and defend on defense once the opposing teams switch things up. It happened again tonight when UAPB started playing with desperation, USF took too long to give back a proper response. There can be several factors for this happening. Coaching, lack of killer instinct, searching for a guy that can make the money plays to halt another teams charge and close out games better. I believe this can be fixed as CBF gets more comfortable and true leadership emerges from a player or multiple guys on the team.

UGLY
Baby cause I'm a thug:
UAPB's Zach "Trick Daddy' Reinhart! As the Joker would say, "why so serious?' Reinhart's behavior might have riled up the Bulls' fans, but it also robbed us all of seeing more CJ Brown and Jimmie Williams develop into the players that they can be, at least this night. The USF coaches failing to hold back Brown and Williams from charging on the court was probably more ugly. Last season it was Coach Fletcher's job to take care of that for CAAR and he did many times, especially when Pryor would be in an heated exchange with opposing players. Somebody has to have CBF back on this.

HOOPS Around the World of College Basketball

(On court Basketball only)

All the teams in the American are off to a good start except for USF(only winless team). Rice (1-1) beat FIU and loss a close one to FSU. Charlotte(1-1) beat Presbyterian and got destroyed by Utah State. Preseason conference favorite UAB was stunned by a loss to Vermont, but has 2 wins over Southern Miss and SE Louisiana fairly easy. Strong start for Lendeborg. He leads the Blazers in all 5 major categories, pts, rebs, assts, stls, and blocks per game. The guy is a monster. UAB won’t win a game without him. The most notable wins in the AAC so far are by Memphis who is 2-0 despite the usual turmoil for Penny’s team. They beat Missouri in a home game, and UNLV on the road. The most impressive team imo is Florida Atlantic who I had rated higher than most others. FAU has a new HC and literally loss their entire team, but I was high on the new coach who came in and didn’t complain, just went to work. FAU added 11(wow) new players plus a whole new coaching staff this offseason. So far they look good and haven’t skipped a beat. Great job by the guys in Boca. Tulsa, WSU, ECU, UNT, Tulane, and UTSA are are undefeated but untested.
Note: Tulsa beat UAPB 104- 80 yesterday. USF host the Golden Lions in the home opener Tuesday.

Top 25 news

Kansas is the No. 1 team and just came off an awesome contested game against #11 UNC.

#6 Gonzaga could go undefeated in their league(again) they just destroyed then #8 Baylor 101 - 63! You just don’t see that kind lopsided win against a fellow top 10 team, at least in men’s basketball. To Baylor’s credit they came right back to beat Calipari’s #16 Razorbacks team 72-67.

Karter Knox note:
Averaging 2.5 pts, 3 rebs, 0.5 asst, and shooting only 28% FG. He is the 8th man in minutes on a 9 man rotation that Calipari is only using so far.

#9 Auburn went to #4 Houston and won 72-67 in a hard fought war. That is the best win on the any top 25 team imo because it is hard to beat the Cougars at their place. Love him or hate him, Bruce Pearl’s teams are just amazing to watch and always good. I have never cared for the man’s character but as a Head Coach, he has been one of the best a long time.

#10 Tennessee routed Louisville 77-55, throwing water on the Cardinals faithful who thought their team was ready for big time. No so fast my friend!
Kasean Pryor Note: just like the entire Cardinals team, that step up in competition against the Vols cooled the fire a little. One made FG(6pts) 2rebs, 3 TOs

HOOPS Get Hyped! UAPB at USF Game Thread

Our players are hyped! Are you for the home opener?

I follow most of the team on social media and they have been very active on those platforms the last week or so. CAAR has to be proud of how the guys are responding and enjoying college life. The wins will come these next 2 games. Opponents like Arkansas Pine Bluff should be just what the doctor needs to help CBF figure out some the coaching decisions he is trying to learn, and hopefully get Reid, Green, and a couple of other guy going offensively.

USF Football’s Atkins Named Burlsworth Trophy Semifinalist for Second Straight Season

Bulls’ all-time leader in career receptions has a catch in 27 straight games

TAMPA, NOV. 12, 2024 – University of South Florida senior wide receiver Sean Atkins (Viera) has been named a semifinalist for the Burlsworth Trophy for the second straight season.

The Bulls’ all-time career receptions leader, Atkins was named among 10 semifinalists for the national award presented annually to the nation’s most outstanding football player who began their career as a walk-on. The selection committee will announce the top three finalists on November 19. The Burlsworth Trophy Award Show will be held on Dec. 9 in Bentonville, Ark.

Atkins enters USF’s game Saturday at Charlotte (3:30 on ESPN+) as the program’s all-time leader with 170 receptions and third all-time in career receiving yards with 1,871, needing 266 to pass the USF record of 2,136 set by Andre Davis (2011-14). Atkins is riding a string of 27 straight games with a reception, just four shy of Davis’ USF record of 31, and has made four or more catches in 21 of his last 22 games, the most for any FBS player over that span.

Coming off a USF record-setting season in 2023 in which he posted 92 receptions for 1,054 yards (both program records) and seven touchdowns to earn second-team All-AAC honors, Atkins again leads the Bulls with 49 catches for 485 yards and a touchdown this season. He is also USF’s primary punt returner and his 11.2 average ranks 15th nationally and third in the AAC.

Atkins walked on at USF in 2019 and earned a scholarship in 2021. He has started 25 career games, the most among current Bulls, and play in 50 games, which is five shy of the program record of 55. He has posted four career 100-yard receiving games, is the first 1,000-yard receiver in a season in program history, and has thrown two touchdown passes and two, two-point conversions.

The other 2024 Burlsworth Trophy semifinalists are Josh Cameron (WR, Baylor), Shaun Dolac (LB, Buffalo), James Carpenter (DL, Indiana), Kaden Wetjen (WR, Iowa), Bryce Boettcher (LB, Oregon), Will Brooks (S, Tennessee), Michael Taaffe (DB, Texas), Carson Schwesinger (LB, UCLA) and Jackson Woodard (LB, UNLV).

The 2023 winner was running back Cody Schrader from the University of Missouri. After dominating at Truman (Mo.) State, Schrader transferred to Missouri where he rushed for 1,627 yards and 14 touchdowns, earning him First-Team All-America by the Associated Press.

About the Burlsworth Trophy

The trophy is named in honor of Brandon Burlsworth. Without one D1 scholarship offer, Brandon walked on to the Arkansas Razorback team in 1994, worked his way to being a three-year starter, and was eventually named an All-American in 1998. Burlsworth was selected as the 63rd overall pick by the Indianapolis Colts in the 1999 NFL draft but was tragically killed in a car accident 11 days later. The Burlsworth Foundation was created in his memory and supports the physical and spiritual needs of children, particularly those children who have limited opportunities.

FOOTBALL USF Football Falls to Navy on Homecoming

Atkins moves into third on USF’s all-time receiving yards chart

TAMPA, FLA., NOV. 9, 2024 – The day after breaking ground on a $340-million on-campus stadium set to open in 2027, South Florida (4-5; 2-3 American) saw its defense provide opportunities and its offense struggle in a 28-7 loss to Navy (7-2; 5-1 American) in Raymond James Stadium.

For the second-straight year, the Bulls went down 14-0 early to Navy before the defense found its footing and stopped the Midshipmen on five straight first half possessions. But the USF offense couldn’t get going and a Navy score in the closing seconds of the half found the Bulls in a 21-0 deficit at the break. The defense held Navy scoreless in the third quarter, but USF also didn’t score in the quarter and a fake punt set up an early fourth quarter Midshipmen score that put the game away.

Navy collected three costly USF turnovers, scoring touchdowns after two, and outgained the Bulls 321 to 60 on the ground. The USF defense forced seven punts and got a turnover of its own, but the Bulls didn’t get on the board until their last possession of the game.

USF quarterback Bryce Archie finished 26-of-43 passing for a career-best 282 yards and a touchdown, but had two interceptions and a fumble as USF saw four of its five longest drives on the day end in a turnover or turnover on downs. Wide receiver Sean Atkins collected seven receptions for 70 yards and moved into third all-time on the USF career receiving yards chart with 1,871 yards, passing Tyre McCants (1,856). Linebacker Jhalyn Shuler led the Bulls with nine tackles, his third time in the last four games doing so, while adding a sack, two tackles for loss and a forced fumble.

The Bulls went down 14-0 after Navy’s first two possessions. Navy opened the scoring with a 60-yard touchdown run by running back Eli Heidenreich on the fourth play of the game. The Midshipmen had barely gained a first down on 3rd-and-short on the prior play, but took the early 7-0 lead when the left side opened up for Heidenreich following the first down.

The Bulls moved into Navy territory with a 37-yard Archie pass to JeyQuan Smith, but two plays later Archie was intercepted at the Navy 21. The Midshipmen capitalized, driving 79 yards and making it 14-0 with a 20-yard touchdown run by Brandon Chatman.

From there, the USF defense stiffened. Shuler put a big hit on Navy quarterback Blake Horvath at midfield forcing a fumble. Decarius Hawthorne recovered at the USF49, energizing the Bulls’ sideline.

Archie drove USF to the Navy 32, where the Bulls went for it on 4th-and-5 but saw Archie sacked for a loss and the Navy offense come back on the field.

The Bulls forced punts on Navy’s next four possessions, limiting the Midshipmen to 43 yards on a string of five-straight possessions, as the USF offense worked to find its rhythm. That nearly happened on a deep Archie toss to Michael Brown-Stephens well behind the Navy defense, but the receiver was unable to corral the catch.

Archie was intercepted on a deep pass on the Bulls’ final possession of the half. Ira Oniha returned it 36 yards to the Navy 47. Two plays later, the Midshipmen made USF pay as Horvath hit Alex Tecza on a short pass and the fullback weaved his way to a 38-yard touchdown that sent Navy to the locker room leading 21-0.

Early in the third quarter, Archie picked up 35 yards on a keeper off a zone read to get the Bulls into Navy territory. But two plays later he was sacked and fumbled ending another USF drive with a turnover.

With the USF defense holding the Midshipmen through the third quarter, Navy lined up for a punt on 4th-and-2 early in the fourth quarter. The snap went to 278-pound nose guard Landon Robinson who rumbled 34 yards to the USF18 on the fake. Four plays later, quarterback Blake Horvath ran 10 yards around the right side for a touchdown that made it 28-0 with 11:45 to play.

USF kept punching as Archie hit Smith with a 48-yard pass to the Navy 13. But five plays later, the Bulls had a 4th-and-2 from the 5 and Archie was stopped short on a quarterback keeper. The Bulls prevented the shutout on their last drive as Archie moved USF 75 yards and hit Brown-Stephens for a 13-yard touchdown.

KEY STATS

• The USF defense forced a fumble and four punts on five straight first half possessions after going down 14-0, but the offense was unable to get on the board as Navy outgained USF 255-105 in the first half.

• Navy won the ground game, outgaining USF 321 to 60 in rushing yards and controlling possession – 38:32 to 21:8

• Four of the Bulls five longest drives on the day ended with a turnover.

NOTABLES
