USF to Face Perennial Power Kentucky Next Season
The Bulls will make a trip to Lexington in 2016.
TAMPA, Fla., Jan. 22, 2015 - USF's men's basketball team will face perennial power Kentucky next season at the
first-ever Hoophall Miami Invitational on Nov. 27, 2015 at American Airlines Arena in Miami, Fla.
It will be the first-ever meeting between the twoprograms. It will also be the first time USF's Orlando Antigua will face
Kentucky as a collegiate head coach. USF's first-year head coach spent the previous five seasons as an assistant
coach at Kentucky under head coach John Calipari and helped the Wildcats to a record of 152-37 and the 2012 NCAA national championship.
"We look forward to the challenge of playing one of the greatest programs in the history of college basketball," Antigua said. "I was fortunate enough to spend five great seasons at Kentucky, so I obviously have great respect for that program and coach John Calipari. I want to thank the folks at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame for including USF in this inaugural event. I know our great fans will make it down to Miami in November."
Antigua did get to face Kentucky in August in an exhibition game when Antigua was the head coach of the Dominican Republic national team. The Dominican Republic defeated Kentucky 63-62 on Aug.17 in the Bahamas. The Hoophall Miami
Invitational is a part of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and will also feature Memphis and Ohio State in a doubleheader. Tickets for the event will go on-sale to the general publicon Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015 at 10 a.m. via Ticketmaster.com.
USF will play in Lexington, Ky., on the Wildcats' home floor, Rupp Arena, during the 2016-17 season. Kentucky, the winningest team in college basketball history, is currently the No. 1 team in the country with a record of 18-0 overall and 5-0 in the Southeastern Conference.
Partners of the Hoophall Miami Invitational include The HEAT Group, the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau and Miami-Dade Sports Commission. ESPN has also committed as a television partner and will release broadcasting information at a later date.
The Hoophall Miami Invitational is the culmination of two separate multi-team events. Campus-round games will take place for each of the above-mentioned schools in two brackets. A full schedule of those games and opponents will be released at later date. The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference is the sponsoring conference of these multi-team events and a partner of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
The Bulls are 7-11 (1-4) this season and are the second youngest team in the country. USF plays at Temple on Thursday at
6:30 p.m. on ESPNews. USF has signed three players for next season including two four-star recruits. Orlando Antigua
is in his first season as head coach after spending the past five seasons as an assistant coach at Kentucky.
