Just an observation…

If my tired eyes are working right… USF has been outscored 111-82 in the 1st quarter. Only BC and Tulsa failed to score in the first quarter. Six teams have scored at least 14 points on us in the 1st quarter. I may be wrong but to me that suggests that the Defense comes into most games unprepared. I believe the DC position should be looked at very hard. Last year wasn’t great either. On the bright side, still very proud of the Bulls and feel fortunate that we were able to squeak out a bowl. After losing our starting QB early in the season, a lesser team with a lesser coach could easily have fallen apart and digressed.

FOOTBALL Atkins Goes Over 2,000 Career Receiving Yards as Bulls Fall at Rice

Wide receiver Sean Atkins becomes second Bull to reach 2,000 career receiving yards, closes within 73 of all-time record.

HOUSTON, TEXAS, NOV. 30, 2024 – South Florida (6-6; 4-4 American) fell to Rice (4-8; 3-5 American), 35-28, Saturday as the Bulls closed out the regular season in the program’s first-ever game at Rice Stadium in Houston.

Headed to a second straight bowl appearance in their second season under head coach Alex Golesh, the Bulls won four of their last six games but saw their offense struggle for much of the game in Houston and Rice quarterback E.J. Warner throw for 430 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Owls to victory.

Wide receiver Sean Atkins caught seven passes for 110 yards, his fifth career 100-yard game, and moved into second all-time on the USF career receiving yardage chart (passing Rodney Adams) as he became just the second USF player to reach 2,000 career receiving yards. He ended the day with 189 career catches for 2,063 yards, just 73 shy of Andre Davis’s USF record of 2,136.

USF quarterback Bryce Archie, coming off career-best 305-yard effort in a win over Tulsa, passed for 227 yards and a touchdown in his seventh straight start, before leaving the game late in the fourth quarter. A USF running game that had logged 731 yards in its previous two games was held to 111 on Saturday.

Meanwhile redshirt freshman Keshaun Singleton continued his strong play, posting his second 100-yard game of the season with seven catches for 107 yards and a 28-yard touchdown catch.

Rice scored touchdowns on its first two possessions of the game, going 92 yards in five plays for a touchdown after the opening kickoff, and took a 27-7 lead to the half. Warner threw for 294 of the Owls 367 first half yard, including touchdown passes of 31 and 23 yards. The USF defense slowed the Owls in the redzone, forcing three first half field goal attempts of which Rice hit two.

Meanwhile, Archie drove the Bulls 75 yards to score on their opening possession of the game, with Nay’Quan Wright getting in the end zone on a short run. But USF struggled to sustain drives after that and was held to a fumble and four punts the rest of the half while tallying 131 first half yards.

USF got the ball to start the second half and Archie moved the Bulls deep into Rice territory with a 52-yard strike to Atkins down the USF sideline. On 4th-and-3 at the Rice 16, the Bulls went for it. Archie rolled right and hit Atkins in the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown. The 75-yard opening drive of the second half cut the Rice lead to 27-14.

Rice returned the ensuing kickoff to the 48 and the offense moved to the USF 13 before settling for a 39-yard field goal attempt that was no good, clanging off the right upright.

USF looked to seize the momentum, but the offense was forced to punt and Warner moved the Owls quickly. He connected on a 37-yard strike and then a 33-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion made it 35-14 with 6:26 to play in the third quarter.

The margin stayed there until late in the fourth quarter. With Archie leaving the game after a hard hit, Izzy Carter came on and led two late USF touchdown drives, hitting Singleton with a 28-yard touchdown pass and Michael Brown-Stephens with a 32-yarder that cut the lead to 35-28 with 2:25 to play.

An onside kick attempt was recovered near midfield by Rice, but USF got the ball back with 27 seconds to play. A final wild pass and series of USF laterals that started at the Bulls 31 ended with Brown-Stephens running inside the Rice 15 before being brought down as time expired.

KEY STATS

• Rice out-gained USF 367-131 in taking a 27-7 first half lead before posting a final yardage margin of 550 to 431.

• Rice scored on six of its first nine drives, missing field goal attempts on two others, before being held scoreless on its last six.

• The Bulls were held to 111 yards rushing on 3.7 yards per carry, after running for 731 yards combined in the previous two games.

FOOTBALL Week 1: Predicting USFs 2024-2025 Season

Fellow Bulls fans, we have made it to the promised land. We are at last at Week 1 & the future looks bright. It has been years since as Bulls fans we felt some sort of good feeling going into the season, will CAG overachieve this season as well?

We most likely did these in the offseason, but now that we are back. Lets hear everyone's predictions for how we finish this year!

I have USF finishing 8-4 this season with a chance to go 9-4 most likely against an ACC team in the bowl game. It is entirely possible USF steals one of Miami/Tulane/Memphis but its also entirely possible USF drops a game we should win a la UAB/FAU blowout losses last season.

Overall we should be much improved, but the SoS is just tough. I think we take a leap forward but injuries may play a part in the front half here. Back half is much easier.

What are your predictions? More wins, more losses or spot on?

NFL

Wirh the Bucs' bye week, Im watching the Ravens vs Steelers game. The Steelers are actually my favorite team! It's another old school battle between two teams that hate each other. When they pan the crowd, I started thinking is there another team that has this type of home field advantage? Maybe KC. Steelers Nation is definitely top 3 imo.

HOOPS Reid Hits Game-Winner as USF Mens Basketball Takes Down Wright State

South Florida finished the Myrtle Beach Invitational in third place

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (November 24, 2024) – The University of South Florida men’s basketball team closed out the Myrtle Beach Invitational in the third-place game against Wright State on Sunday. Jayden Reid hit the game-winning shot with 0.4 seconds left on the clock to give the Bulls a 73-72 victory.

Wright State hit a go-ahead jumper with 5.0 seconds left on the clock, which gave WSU a 72-71 lead. Reid took the inbound pass and started to bring the ball up the court with pace. He tried to go baseline, but the defender cut him off. Reid stepped back and came up clutch as he drained the game-winning shot for the Bulls.

With the victory, South Florida improved to 4-3 on the season, while Wright State fell to 4-4 on the year. Reid finished with a game-high 14 points. Jamille Reynolds picked up his second double-double with a career-high 14 rebounds and 13 points. Kobe Knox rounded out the double-digit scores with 10 points. USF is 12-1 when Kobe Knox scores in double digits.

The Bulls opened the game with intensity and jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. South Florida held Wright State scoreless for the first three minutes. At the first media timeout, USF had a 4-3 lead.

The Raiders answered with a 17-3 run and took a.20-7 lead with 10:51 left in the half. CJ Brown scored four of the next six points for USF as the Bulls cut the deficit to 24-13 with just under eight minutes left until the break.

South Florida utilized a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to 26-24 with 4:12 left until half. During the run, Jamille Reynolds, De’Ante Green, and Kasen Jennings all had three points. The Bulls outscored the Raiders 10-9 to end the half and cut the deficit to 34-32. Reid hit a key 3-pointer in transition.

USF opened the second half with a 13-4 run and took a 45-38 lead. During the run, Reynolds accounted for four points. Reynolds brought down a defensive rebound and threw the outlet pass ahead to Reid for the layup, which forced the Raiders to call a timeout.

The two squads were in a back-and-forth battle for the next 5:30 minutes. The Bulls held a 58-52 lead with 11:10left in regulation.

For the next 3:30 minutes, the game was a defensive battle, as USF led 62-58. Reynolds scored a huge dunk.

Wright State outscored South Florida 7-5, but the Bulls held a 67-65 lead with just under four minutes left to play in regulation. The two sides continued to battle back and forth, which set up a fantastic finish to the game.

Reynolds blocked a game-high three shots. Brandon Stroud dished out a game-high four assists and recorded a game-high three steals. South Florida outscored Wright State 44-30 inside the paint and 17-11 in fastbreak points. The Bulls held the Horizon League Preseason Player of the Year, Brandon Noel, to just five points. He came into the game averaging 23.0 points per game.

Jack Doumbia tallied a game-high 18 points and brought down ten rebounds to lead the Raiders. Solomon Callaghan finished with 15 points. Alex Huibregtse added 12 points, while Keaton Norris chipped in with 10.

· Jamille Reynolds collected his second double-double with 14 rebounds and 13 points. It was his fifth game scoring in double figures and his second game with double-digit rebounds.

· Kobe Knox recorded his fourth game in double figures.

AAC Coaching Carousel

Thought we should have a thread for all of the changes.

ECU predictably hires their interim, Blake Harrell: https://www.espn.com/college-footba...ast-carolina-promote-blake-harrell-head-coach

Seems like a good hire. The team has responded to him and he's made his whole career in the Carolinas (with a year at Kennesaw), so he should be pretty plugged into the recruiting scene there. It's a fanbase with unrealistic expectations however. Skippy was the last HC who left willingly from ECU, and the two guys before him were fired too. Not sure it's a great job for someone who wants to move up the ranks, so this guy might be the best they can do.

HOOPS Semifinal Matchup: USF vs Wright State Game Thread (11/24/24)

I'm going to miss the game live, because I plan on going to church. I'm still under the weather and haven't been able to leave the house in a week, so I'm looking forward to it. So fam you all have to hold it down for me until I can watch the replay later in the afternoon. Here's something about Wright State, can be a tough matchup for the Bulls.

Wright State Starting Five
6-0 JR G - Keaton Norris(5.9 Pts, 2.7 Rebs, 5.1 Asst)
6-5 SO G - Logan Woods(9.7 Pts, 2.6 Rebs, 1.7 Asst)
6-3 SR G - Alex Huibregtse(16.7 Pts, 4 Rebs, 3 Asst)
6-6 SR F - Jack Doumbia(8 Pts, 5 Rebs)
6-8 JR F - Brandon Noel(23 pts, 9 Rebs)

The guy I highlighted is the guy USF has to control because I do not think they can stop him. Those numbers above are his season total, but in this tournament he has been putting up video game numbers. Noel is averaging 26.5 Pts, 6 Rebs, Shooting 63% overall, 71% three-pt line, 100% from the Free Throw line. Reynolds will not be able to guard him, so the smart thing is to feed Reynolds the ball early and often and have him go into the chest of Noel to see if he can get some early fouls on him. If they do not, then Noel will likely get Reynolds off the floor pretty quick either with foul trouble or fatigue.

Overall Wright State is an excellent shooting team, (50% FG, 35% 3Pt, 75% FT) and they average 80 PPG as a team. Wright State matches USF in steals per game, Assts, and rebounding. The biggest advantage in WSU favor is obviously the shooting. As you see by the sizes listed above, Wright State is not a very tall team, but they spread the floor and use a lot of screen motion to free shooters and get the matchups they like. They are a good passing team because of it. They come in with a record of 4-3 with losses to Troy, Bradley, and Mark Pope's Kentucky Wildcats. In the UK game they were overwhelmed by the athletic talent, and lost 103 - 62 in both teams' 1st game of the season. Pope is a better offensive coach than Calipari so Kentucky is really good again. Wright State's most notable wins are against Princeton, and Miami(OH). Solid wins but both of those teams don't seem as good early as they have been at times in the past. If Wright State beats USF it will be their best win of the season imo. USF is still very talented, even though they haven't played up to their standards as of yet.

USF could give up another 90+ points in this game if their defensive communication is once again lacking.

HOOPS Good/Bad/Ugly of USF loss to MTSU

GOOD
1) Jayden Reid - Got back in the starting lineup and after a few of his annual bad body language moments that showcased his usual unforced turnovers and giving up on defense, Reid was able to find his shot to score a career high 18 pts to lead the team in scoring. He added 4 assists(could've had more), and 4 rebounds. If USF is going to be successful at any point this season, Reid has to play with confidence whether his shot is falling or not. A PG doesn't have to lead the team in scoring in order to have a strong presence. Bad Body language is bad MOJO for the entire team.

2) Jamille Reynolds - Boy what a MONSTER....when he can stay on the floor. The BIG MAN scored 17 pts and grabbed 9 rebounds in only 22 minutes. Reynolds went 6 for 6 from the field and 5 of 6 from the free throw line. That's high level stuff from Mille and he can even do more than that. The coaching staff should challenge him to be more hungrier to grab rebounds, especially on the offensive end. Even without the foul trouble Reynolds is probably a max 25 minute player, so let's get everything from him that he is capable of giving.

3) Jimmie Williams - The old saying was that the only coach ever capable of holding Michael Jordan under 20 points was his college head coach the legendary Dean Smith. Well I'm saying the only coach capable of holding Jimmie Williams from being Youndblood 2.0 is Coach Ben Fletcher(more on him later). Williams was great again in only 14 minutes of PT, he scored 12 points, hit two threes, and brought a physical presence on both offense and defense. Williams is a 3 level scorer and easily the best all around guard on the team. He's always been a high level scorer and a winner, demonstrated by his 48 PT game in leading his JC team to a championship. It's not a good look that he is buried behind other guys and not getting 25 to 30 minutes per game. The future Bulls head coach really needs to recruit Williams and Brown the first minute he is in place.

BAD
1) Ben Fletcher - Coach said over a week ago that he had pretty much settled on a rotation, but several games later he still hasn't figured out what he wants to do there. Constant changing of the lineup, unbalanced minutes given to guys that either don't deserve to get them or guys getting less than they deserve(Williams, Green, Brown). If this was professional basketball, Williams and Brown would be demanding a trade somewhere else. Coach Fletcher has to do better by his team and they will in turn do better for him.

2) USF Defense - What happened to the D? Throughout history that has never been a good thing. It has never been good for a man to be asked from a woman, and it's never good for a team in sports to be asked about them. There are plenty creams, devices, and pills to help a man with his D. The cure for the basketball team's weak D comes from the demand of the coaches and caliber of players. No game has had USF so out-talented that they cannot matchup and slow down the opposing teams from looking like the Warriors or Celtics, not the Gators and certainly not the Blue Raiders. USF has given up 98 and 95 total points in 2 of the 6 games they have played. In three of these games they have allowed Florida, Charleston, and MTSU to score over 50 points in one half of action. This is coaching which accounts for scouting, preparation, effort, and player rotation. There is a reason why we have seen more players pointing their fingers at each other more in 6 games than they did in 30 games last season.

UGLY
End of the game
-
The ESPN commentators were very critical of the some of the coaching decisions of USF, but nothing united the viewers and listeners to the curious decision that the USF coaches made by not having the team foul a MTSU player while down 2 scores with under a minute to play. Rewatching that situation again, the decision not to foul even caught MTSU and the officials by surprise as well. It's common knowledge to extend games, now in some instances it can be frustrating when teams start fouling in a hopeless cause as the game is already a loss and people are ready to just get it over with. However USF still was within 2 scores, combining that with MTSU not being a great FT shooting team, and a hot Jimmie Williams going, called for an extension of the game imo. This also can't just all be on Coach Fletcher. The entire staff has to be better as every coach should be aware of something like this.
