Charlotte at South Florida (-2.5) Game Thread

The Bulls open as a 2.5 point favorite with an over/under set at 134.5. If Charlotte wins they will have the inside track at the regular season conference championship (with tiebreakers against FAU and USF, and very favorable remaining schedule), and if USF wins it sets up a showdown in a week-and-a-half against the Owls in a game that could decide the regular season champion.
  • Charlotte is 7-1 ATS in the last 8 games, but only 1-3 ATS as a road dog this season
  • USF is 11-1-2 ATS in their last 14 games, and 7-3-1 as a home favorite this season

HOOPS South Florida Wins Comeback Thriller Against Charlotte

TAMPA, Fla. (February 7, 2024) – The University of South Florida men’s basketball team returned to the friendly confines of the Yuengling Center for an American Athletic Conference showdown with Charlotte on Tuesday. Selton Miguel led the Bulls with a game-high 22 as USF rallied from down 17 for a 72-69 victory.

With the victory, South Florida improved to 16-5 overall and 9-1 in AAC play, while Charlotte fell to 14-8 overall and 8-2 in conference action. The Bulls played in front of the largest crowd this season in the Yuengling Center with an attendance of 6,156. USF moved into sole possession of first place in the AAC standings (Florida Atlantic does not play until Thursday).

The Bulls extended their winning streak to eight conference games, which is the longest in program history. South Florida started the season 16-5 for just the second time in program history. The only other time was during the 1975-76 campaign. The eight-game winning streak is the third-longest winning streak in program history. It is the first time since the 1982-83 season when the team won nine straight.

The 49ers started the game with a 14-7 run, on 3-for-3 shooting from behind the 3-point line. Charlotte extended its lead to 22-13 with 11:32 left in the opening stanza with a slight 7-6 edge.

The Bulls mounted a little comeback with a 5-4 tilt as Selton Miguel and Chris Youngblood combined for five free throws. CLT answered with a 14-8 run and extended its lead to 40-26 with just under four minutes left in the half.

The Bulls battled and went on an 11-7 run to close out the half. USF cut the CLT lead to 47-37 at the break.

Charlotte edged South Florida 8-7 to open the second half and extended its lead to 55-44 with just over 15 minutes left in regulation. The 49ers added an 8-4 run and extended their lead to 63-48 with 11:24 left in regulation.

The Bulls were unfazed and responded with a 9-0 run and cut the deficit to 63-57 with 7:21 left in regulation. During the run, Miguel knocked down four free throws. Brandon Stroud drained a corner three, followed by a driving layup by Miguel.

South Florida continued to apply pressure and outscored Charlotte 7-5. The Bulls cut the deficit to 68-64 with just over four minutes left in regulation. USF utilized shutdown defense and held CLT to just one made free throw for the remainder of the game. Jayden Reid made the biggest play of his young career and picked the pocket of the Charlotte ball handler. He took it the distance for a layup and pulled the Bulls within one, 69-68 with just over a minute left to play.

Stroud gave USF its first lead, 70-69, with 29 seconds left on the clock. Miguel knocked down two free throws to seal it for the Bulls. The South Florida offense capitalized on that with an 8-1 run to close out the game and claim a 72-69 victory.

Miguel led all scorers with 22 points. He surpassed the 1,000 career-point mark. He tied for a game-high with five assists. He added two rebounds and one steal. Youngblood added a 13-point performance with four rebounds, two assists, and one block. Knox closed out the double-digit scorers with 13 points. He collected three rebounds, one assist, and one block. Stroud led the team in rebounding for the second-straight game with seven. He chipped in with seven points and two assists. Corey Walker Jr. came up huge on the offensive glass with a game-high four offensive rebounds. He added four clutch points on 2-of-3 shooting.

Dishon Jackson led Charlotte with 16 points. He collected seven rebounds with one assist. Igor Milicic Jr. led CLT with nine rebounds to go along with his 15 points. He tied for a game-high five assists. Nik Graves added 12 points, while Lu’cye Patterson posted 10 points.

The USF bench outscored the CLT bench 30-9. South Florida did not allow a bench point in the second half. The Bulls forced 12 turnovers and only turned the ball over five times. USF took advantage of the turnovers and turned them into 14 points. The 11 offensive rebounds by South Florida led to 18 second-chance points.

Bulls add seven transfers and three high school recruits to the highest rated class outside the autonomous five conferences

TAMPA, FLA., FEB. 7, 2024 – Head coach Alex Golesh and the South Florida Football staff announced the addition of 10 more new Bulls to USF’s 2024 Signing Class as the NCAA Late Signing Period began Wednesday, bringing the highest-ranked class in the American Athletic Conference by Rivals, and highest-ranked among all programs outside of the autonomous five conferences, to 35 members .

We wanted to recruit high school guys, we want to develop guys and fill holes that we feel like we need from the transfer portal, and I feel like we did both. You look at the programs we took guys from, there are some really, really winning programs with elite high school coaches. We got guys that know how to win and know how to work. ”

“The Camren Campbell piece, I was at the basketball game last night still working on that one. To get a young man from right here in Tampa that a lot of people in this country wanted at a position of need, I am super grateful to our staff and super grateful for what DeMarcus Van Dyke came in and did really, really quickly and certainly Coach Orlando and that defensive staff worked very hard.”

HOOPS Around the American (Jan. 29 - Feb. 4)

The AAC is dominating the ESPN airwaves today, with the Game of the Week being North Texas at #22 Florida Atlantic

North Texas (12-6, 5-1) at #22 Florida Atlantic (16-4, 6-1); 1pm (espn2)
SMU (13-6, 4-2) at Wichita State (8-11, 0-6); 3pm (espn2)
#19 Memphis (15-4, 4-2) at UAB (12-7, 4-2); 5pm (ESPN)
Temple (8-12, 1-6) at East Carolina (10-10, 3-4); 5pm (espn2)

Here are my updated rankings headed into today's game:

NCAA Tournament Bound

1. Florida Atlantic (16-4, 6-1); NET: #27
- Owls have now won 5 in a row, and have won 24 of their last 25 home games; Guard Johnell Davis is averaging 19.6 ppg, 5.7 rpg and 3.7 apg in conference play

2. Memphis (15-4, 4-2); NET: #59 - Tigers have lost 2 in a row by a combined 3 points, and have had to sit around and think about with their last win coming on two weeks ago. Memphis needs to right the ship today at a good UAB team, before fattening up Rice, Wichita State and Temple (on the road)

On the Bubble

3. North Texas (12-6, 5-1); NET: #71 - the Mean Green's win at home against SMU was much needed as their 4 other conference wins were against teams with a combined conference record of 7-21. The Mean Green only allow 59.4 ppg (4th in DI) and can validate their position near the top of the AAC with a win at #22 FAU on Sunday

4. SMU (13-6, 4-2); NET: #33 - The Mustang's NET ranking remained virtually the same despite blowing out Tulsa and losing at North Texas; a late February stretch of games against Memphis, at FAU and at USF - a combined 16-4 in conference - will likely determine their post season fate

NIT Bound

5. Charlotte (13-7, 7-1); NET: #95 - the 49ers play with a slow tempo, averaging 65.3 possessions per game (356th in DI); Charlotte likely isn't going to fade from the conference race as only 3 of their last 10 games are against teams with a winning conference record (at Memphis and home/away against USF), and a record of 20-10 and 14-4 may be good enough to challenge for the regular season title

Post Season Possible

6. South Florida (13-5, 6-1); NET: #116 - Bulls have won 11 of their last 12 and would be ranked higher, but outside of their win at Memphis their other 5 conference wins are against the bottom four teams in the conference, who are a combined 4-24 in conference play; upcoming games against North Texas (road) and Charlotte (home) should be a good barometer of how improved USF really is

7. Tulane (12-8, 3-5); NET: #117 - Green Wave, losers of 5 of their last 7, would likely be higher in the rankings if they could win close games, but 3 of their 5 conferences losses have come by a combined 6 points; with 5 games left against the top 4 teams in the conference Tulane could dramatically lower their NET if they can get hot

8. UAB (12-7, 4-2); NET: #148 - the Blazers have a great opportunity to surge up the rankings with their next two home games are against #19 Memphis and #22 Florida Atlantic with tough road games against SMU and North Texas sandwiched in between

Second Division

9. Tulsa (11-8, 2-5); NET: #179 - Golden Hurricane have won 2 of their last 3, and can get their 3rd win Wednesday at home against Wichita State, then have a 5 game stretch against teams with a combined record of 29-5 in conference

10. East Carolina (10-10, 3-4); NET: #188 - Pirates can get to .500 in conference with a win at home against Temple on Sunday; 5 of East Carolina's 10 losses have been by 5 points are less - they won't be pushovers

11. Wichita State (8-11, 0-6); NET: #160 - The Shockers' 7-1 start to the season is a distant memory

12. UTSA (8-13, 2-6): NET: #279 - The Road Runners have allowed 85.0 ppg - second worst in DI

13. Rice (7-13, 1-6); NET: # 248 - Owls have had a 2nd half lead in 3 of their 6 conference losses

14. Temple (8-12, 1-6); NET: #246 - Owls are shooting 37.4% from the field - 4th worst in DI
