Deion Sanders and Prime Prep Academy

So... Concerning Prime Prep Academy, there's a lot of focus on the messenger (McMurphy) and not so much on the message. But it would be irresponsible for USF not to vet the information. The school was a disaster scholastically and financially. The Dallas Morning News documents this in The Spectacular Collapse of Dion Sanders' Prime Prep Academy and subsequent coverage. There's a trail of civil lawsuits and a criminal investigation (albeit, not specifically against Sanders).

Somebody here suggested that Sanders only lent his brand to the school and others were responsible for the gross mismanagement. Sanders co-founded the school, and extensive media coverage shows he was closely entwined and at times was the front man. How crazy did it get? The Dallas Observer reports that Sanders was accused by three school officials of trying to strangle them. The Observer claims to have audio of Sanders admitting that he choked the school's COO. I couldn't make out the audio, but they provide a transcript that you can read through the above link. The Washington Post considered the allegations credible enough to link to another Observer report saying that one of the school employees allegedly choked by Sanders is suing. The Post also tells the story of DeMarcus Peterson, a Prime Academy grad who received a scholarship to Texas Southern to run track. Peterson had his scholarship revoked because it was determined he was academically ineligible. Peterson is quoted in the Post story as saying, "I was told that because of the classes that I had took and Deion Sanders' school - that he had built, that he created, that he told us would be accredited, which it wasn't - those classes, unfortunately, did not count," Peterson quit the team, went to work as a lifeguard, and finished school $35,000 in debt, according to the story.

There were reports of teachers giving out quizzes with the answers already on them and students using school-issued laptops for cheating. "Students would come to class, especially football players, and class was just like recess," Peterson told the Washington Post. "It was just so easy and the teacher, he just didn't care. It was like we just wanted to pass everybody and get get everybody out of there."

I don't know whether the Prime Academy scandals are disqualifying as to Sanders' suitability to coach at USF. Obviously, Sanders was cleared enough to be hired at Jackson State. But as I see it, they're red flags in a sea of red flags. Hiring Sanders would pose a great risk for embarrassment to USF. For many schools, the potential reward would be worth the risk. But USF has made great gains in its reputation with its recognition for preeminence as a research school and other advances. This is not a good match.

A couple of questions unrelated to Prime Prep Academy: Sanders has indicated he wants to bring his assistant coaches to his next job. Would that preclude hiring the best available OC/DC and position coaches? If Sanders were to bring Shedeur to play quarterback, what would that mean for Gerry Bohanon and the very promising Byrum Brown? Would they stick around?

There's a lot more to consider than what's been posted to date.

FOOTBALL Coaching Rumors 11/16

So I've been digging and digging.

The one name that comes up the most as really (I mean really) wanting the job is Jon Gruden. Gruden comes with name value that will likely sell some season tickets and a lot of coaching experience but only two years of actual full-time college coaching experience. I talked to a source close who has connections to Gruden and he is pushing hard to get his foot in the door at USF. The NFL door is closed and likely to stay shut on Gruden for some time so that would help bring some stability to the situation if hired. He isn't going to be able to jump quickly to another job either given the lack of a college resume so he would be in it for a while. While he was knocked for his rookie and drafting issues with the Raiders, he loves coaching ball and developing players so he feels like he could be very effective at USF. He would give USF a coach who can win the press conference for the first time since Willie Taggart.

A name I have not seen mentioned much but I could see coming into play is another former NFL coach, Bill O'Brien. O'Brien spent almost his entire early career in college before going to work for the New England Patriots. Word on the street at Bama is Nick Saban is looking to retool his offense and O'Brien had basically promised to stay with Bryce Young until he was able to go pro which will happen after this current season. The knocks on O'Brien are mostly about his personality and the dumpster fire he led at Houston after grabbing control of the organization, but he can coach and he demands a lot from his players and would be viewed as the opposite of Jeff Scott in many ways. So far, O'Brien has struck out on getting a P5 gig and has been picky about what he is looking at. I could see Michael Kelly getting sold on O'Brien and they should know each other from O'Brien's time in the ACC.

Obviously, everyone wants Deion Sanders, I'm still hearing Colorado is pretty hot and heavy on trying to land prime. Auburn and Georgia Tech who were expected to be involved as well are apparently focused on other candidates for now per my sources.

One name that has not heard from USF is Scott Frost. I happen to have some connections with ole Frosty and he is definitely interested in getting back in the game and some USF alums have reached out to the coach, but no one involved with the search has contacted the unemployed former UCF and Nebraska coach. I think that would be a bad hire knowing quite a bit about Frost.

Tom Allen is in play at IU, he is not getting fired there, but I think the ceiling at the job is very apparent and Allen knows he would kill it recruiting in the Bay Area.

Tom Herman is also very interested in the job. The lack of connections to the area and the way that Texas flamed out is concerning to me. I think Herman ends up with a more logical job especially if Tulsa opens up. I think he would be a good fit there.

With Michael Kelly's job likely on the line I still think Willie Simmons is a no-go for the reasons I outlined early on and Larry Scott isn't moving the needle at Howard either. I cannot imagine him hiring a coach with zero head coaching experience after the way things went with Jeff Scott so Ole Miss RB coach Marquel Blackwell is a no-go to me as well so is Penn State's Ja'Juan Seider who I've seen people mention too.

I see Jason Candle's name mentioned a lot and the man has literally never lived outside of Ohio in his 43 years on earth other than two years at Geneva college as a college player and he moved back to Ohio as soon as possible. I just don't see that happening. I have a connection there, so I'm digging into it.

If you go the non-HC route I still think Alex Golesh is the guy you hire from Tennessee.

I don't see a wild card hire like Urban Meyer or Dan Mullen or anyone like that coming into play either.

HOOPS South Florida vs. St. Joseph's (-1)

Taking the Fighting Martelli's. Both teams played with short benches yesterday so tonight's game will be able who is better conditioned - that's not Tchewa which will create some interior space for the Hawks to hit the board, where both teams are fairly evenly matched. St. Joe's has slightly better Offensive Efficiency and Defensive Efficiency metrics.

I'll take the team that has actually won twice this season over a team that is starting to come unglued a bit as the losses mount early.

Pick: St. Joseph's -1
2022-23 Record: 3-1

411 on new AAC teams who officially join in July 2023

I would like to address the subject of respect for your opponents. USF started off like a ball of fire in both football and basketball. Our fans let this go to their heads. The best football coach in school history was fired over a minor incident which was overblown by effete snobs who knew nothing about football. It was like the death penalty for a parking ticket imo. Anyone who sides with those two is wrong imo.

The six new conference members are not a step down for USF. They are a challenge. These teams with the exception of UTSA have their own on campus football stadiums to begin with. 1. Charlotte's Richardson Stadium currently seats 15,314 but is expandable to 40k plus 24 luxury boxes 2. FAU Stadium in Boca Raton seats 29,571. FAU was offered a 6M a year naming rights deal from GEO, an investor and operater of prisons. The FAU game announcer Ken Lavicka dubbed the Stadium Owlcatrez. The public went into a furor over it and the President and AD nixed the deal. 3. North Texas' Apogee Stadium seats 30,850 and is expandable 4. Rice Stadium seat 47,100 and is expandable to 59K. UAB's Protective Life Stadium seats 47,100. UTSA's Journey Stadium seats 64,000. Journey Stadium was built in 1993 as the Alamo Dome. UTSA has broken ground for a 35,000 seat OCS. Since SanAntonio never got the NFL team they built the Alamo Dome for, at least the Roadrunners can make it look like their home field. The OCS will improve the football programs cash flow and is expandable.

In basketball the Bulls have a lot of experience against Charlotte and UAB. The Bulls have played the 49ers 54 times and hold a 29-25 edge over the 49ers in the series. The Bulls have played the Blazers 59 times and the Blazers hold a 38-21 edge over the Bulls in the series.

Comparing USF to the six newbies:

USF football 2021: 2-10 (1-7) 2022: 1-10 (0-7) Cum: 3-20 (1-14) Coach Jeff Scott Stadium: Ray Jay 64,000
USF Basketball 2021: 8-23 (3-15) 2022: 0-4 (0-0) Cum: 8-19 (3-15) Coach Brian Gregory Yuengling Ctr 12,499

HOOPS D.J. Patrick update

Bulls forward D.J. Patrick missed the game vs. UAB due to an ankle injury. I didn't notice him wearing a boot but some guys wear an 'ankle boot' and that doesn't come far up the leg. He also had loose leg pants on so they might have covered the boot up. I also didn't notice him walking with a limp. I'm not expecting him to play against Saint Joseph's.

Projected Depth Chart

This seems to be the quietest I've ever seen any college being about it's potential depth chart. I'll take a stab at Week 1 just based on what I've read and try to go three deep or four where they might rotate. Happy to have it corrected by those with more information. Really just guessing on o-line and in the secondary- I have no idea where the newcomers are lining up and the roster is listing guys in strange places. I feel like Timarcus Simpson wouldn't have received a scholarship if he wasn't going to be playing. At RB, I think if Joiner were healthy, it would be a pretty clear hierarchy with Mangham and Joiner getting the lion's share, Battie up next, and Powell and Dukes fighting for scraps. I don't know if Dukes has been training at the slot- I thought that was the original plan.

QB: Bohanon, Marsh, Brown
Big RB: Mangham, Powell
Smaller RB: Battie, Dukes
X: X Weaver, Latrell Williams/K Brown
Y: Terry, Ajou, Willis
Slot: Horn, Dollison, Stanley
TE: Carter, Greenwald, Littlejohn, with Motillo for blocking
OT: Jennings, Bailey
OG: Harris, Perkins
C: Cecil, Best
OG: Hall or Lofton
OT: Jacobs, Kilfoyl

DE: Logan, Ross, Grant
DT: Cheney, J Wiliams, Matos
DT: Yates, Bags, Hobbs
DE: Hansford, Vaughn, Kelly, M Williams
LB: Boyles, Shuler, Harris
LB: Grier, Gordon, Norris
CB: C Williams, A Brown
NB: Will Jones, Stokes
S: Hill, LaPointe
S: Thornton, Robinson, Townsel
CB: D Evans, Timarcus Simpson, Knox

DT is the clear weak spot, but I think this is the first time in a few years that we can look at the groups and think that each one should at least be average for the conference. Beyond that, I really do think this is 30+ points per game offense. It might be a 28 PPG defense, but that'd be a big improvement.
