South Florida Beach Volleyball Announces 2024 Exhibition Schedule

Head Coach Pri Piantadosi-Lima announces the Bulls first ever Exhibition Schedule

TAMPA, Sept. 30, 2024
– The University of South Florida Bulls Beach Volleyball program and head coach Pri Piantadosi-Lima have announced the inaugural fall exhibition schedule featuring four stops.

First, the Bulls will debut in the AVCA Beach Pairs Qualifier (East) October 12-13 in Cartersville, Georgia. The Bulls will face NCAA Ranked competitors in this Atlanta Bid Tournament including Georgia State, and Stetson University.

The following weekend, the Bulls play in Manhattan Beach, Calif. October 18-20 for the AVCA Beach Pairs Qualifier (West). The Bulls will face NCAA Ranked competitors in this Manhattan Beach Bid Tournament including the University of Southern California, the University of Washington, Stanford, LMU, Cal Berkley, and UCLA.

The Bulls then return to Tampa, Fla. for the first-ever Bulls Beach Bash October 26-27. This competition will feature the likes of tough opponents such as Tampa University, FIU, and FGCU.

Lastly, Nov. 2-3, the Bulls head to Tavares, Fla. to finish AVCA Beach Pairs Qualifying play. No teams have been released yet for this event.

In each of these AVCA Qualifier meets, the Bulls will have two pairs in the bid division, vying for a chance to qualify for the AVCA Collegiate BVB Pairs National Championships. While three other pairs will be competing in the open division against other schools.

Similar to the NCAA, but just a different governing body, the AVCA allows another stage for college beach volleyball athletes to compete against the sport’s best of the best at the collegiate level. Even though the Bulls are a club team at the moment, as they prepare to join NCAA competition for the 2026 Spring season, they’re eligible to compete for AVCA Championships.

Bulls graduate transfer Audrey Gauthier has made it to the AVCA Pairs National Championship before in Fall 2022 as a member of Stetson University and will be looking to earn a bid to return.

USF Athletics Announces New NIL Strategy Unit Led By General Manager Andrew Warsaw

Warsaw to lead team focused on maximizing NIL opportunities and resources for all Bulls athletic programs

TAMPA, JULY 29, 2024 – Vice President for Athletics Michael Kelly has announced the addition of a new NIL Strategy unit within South Florida Athletics and has named current Associate Athletic Director/USF Football Chief of Staff Andrew Warsaw to lead the unit, adding NIL General Manager to his title.

“College athletics is changing and evolving rapidly and the University of South Florida intends to be on the forefront of that evolution,” Kelly said. “We are building a model athletic department for these modern times. As the era of permissiveness with what we can provide student-athletes and revenue sharing continues to evolve, South Florida intends to be as aggressive as we can be and continue to meet every new standard.”

Warsaw, who has worked alongside head football coach Alex Golesh as football chief of staff since December of 2022 and has nearly 20 years of collegiate and NFL operations experience, will lead an initial staff of four in the NIL Strategy department. Staff members will be tasked with identification of NIL opportunities, NIL marketing, fundraising, education, scheduling and execution of NIL commitments, and the growth of NIL resources among their duties serving USF’s nearly 500 student-athletes across 21 sports.

“This is an exciting time at the University of South Florida and a tremendous opportunity to lead a team that will have a major impact on the resources we can provide USF student-athletes and our ability to compete at the highest level across all sports,” Warsaw said. “There is a great commitment from the University and Vice President for Athletics Michael Kelly to participate in NIL opportunities at the highest level allowed. The NIL Strategy team working with our outstanding student-athletes, coaches, donors, partners, and fast-growing community will be a big part of our ability to do just that and be in a position for success as the collegiate sports landscape continues to evolve.

“There is so much opportunity here in the Bay Area and a strong desire within the community to be involved and associated with elite college athletics.”

Additional staff positions under Warsaw’s direction will include an assistant general manager, a director of NIL community development, a manager of NIL operations and a director of NIL administration.

The Fowler Avenue Collective will continue to serve as the exclusive collective of South Florida Athletics. The Fowler Avenue Collective is independent of South Florida Athletics with a mission to educate, support and market Bull student-athletes.

FOOTBALL USF Football Falls at Tulane in Conference Opener

The South Florida football team fell in its conference-opening clash with Tulane, 45-10, at Yulman Stadium in New Orleans Saturday afternoon.

Tulane came out hot, scoring the first 31 points and forcing two early turnovers, to extend its regular season conference winning streak to 11 games, the fifth-longest streak in the nation, and won its 26th game in its last 33 overall, sixth-most nationally over that span.

Quarterback Byrum Brown completed 12-of-18 passes for 134 passing yards, while also scoring a touchdown on the ground before leaving early in the third quarter due to injury. Quarterback Bryce Archie filled in for Brown, going 4-for-10 for 41 yards passing.

Sean Atkins collected three receptions for 20 yards on the day, moving him just five receptions away (148) from tying the program record at USF, held by Tampa native Andre Davis (2011-14) with 153. Abdur-Rahmaan Yaseen had a season-best five catches for 85 yards.

Tulane scored the first 31 points before the Bulls got on the board just before the end of the first half to go to the locker room trailing 31-7. The Green Wave outgained USF 317 to 148 in the half and got a strong performance from quarterback Darian Mensah who went 12-of-14 for 242 yards and three touchdowns in the first 30 minutes before finishing 18-of-22 for 326 yards and three touchdowns on the day.

The Bulls’ defense forced a Tulane punt on the first possession of the second half. Brown led the Bulls offense back on the field, but after moving to the 34 he was sacked and rolled up on. After trainers tended to him on the field, Brown walked off for further observation with 9:10 to play in the third and Bryce Archie came on.

Archie moved the Bulls inside the Tulane 20, but another Tulane sack stalled the drive and John Cannon hit a 45-yard field goal to make it 31-10. It was Cannon’s tenth career FG of 40 or more yards, but the Bulls would get no closer.

Tulane responded with a 75-yard touchdown drive and took a 38-10 lead into the fourth quarter.

Back to the Start

The Bulls received the opening kickoff and went three-and-out. Tulane took over on its own 31 and quickly moved 69 yards with quarterback Darian Mensah completing three passes for 59 yards and Makhi Hughes’ giving the Green Wave a 7-0 lead on a five-yard run over the right side.

The Bulls were forced to punt again at midfield and Andrew Stokes pinned Tulane on their own 12. The Green Wave moved 88 yards in seven plays with Mensah hitting Dontae Fleming with a 15-yard touchdown pass that gave Tulane a 14-0 lead with 4:39 left in the first quarter.

After a sack of Brown, the Bulls were forced to punt again and Tulane took over on its own 15. The Green Wave drove 68 yards before the Bulls started to slow them down and forced a 35-yard field goal that gave Tulane a 17-0 lead.

The Bulls went three-and-out for the second time and Tulane took over on its own 11 after a 61-yard punt from Stokes. This time, USF forced a three-and-out and had good field position at its own 44 following the punt.

A Brown completion to Yaseen moved the Bulls into Tulane territory, but two plays later Nay’Quan Wright fumbled and the Green Wave pounced on it at the TU26.

The USF defense had Tulane in a third and long, but Mensah scrambled for a first down near midfield. A play later he hit Mario Williams coming across the field for a 53-yard touchdown and the Green Wave led 24-0.

With four minutes left in the half, USF took over on its own 14. The Bulls moved to the 38 before Gerrod Henderson broke through the left side, sacked Brown and forced a fumble. Tulane recovered on the Bulls 29 and two plays later the Green Wave led 31-0 after a 27-yard touchdown pass to Williams.

Brown led the USF offense back on the field with under two minutes to play. He hit Yaseen for a big gain of 51 yards to the Tulane 10. From there, Brown took care of business himself, bouncing off tacklers up the middle for a 10-yard touchdown run that got USF on the board with 34 seconds in the half.

KEY STATS

• Tulane outgained USF 317 to 148 in the first half and 528 to 201 on the day.

• USF fell to 6-6 in AAC openers and 11-11 in conference openers overall.

FOOTBALL A look at USF projected starters PFF numbers and more

I thought it would be interesting to dive into some of the numbers of the projected starters for the upcoming season per PFF and even look back at how the Bulls stacked up in the overall ratings on offense and defense using PFF.

As a reminder with PFF 60 is considered average so anything above that is good. I've bolded in the most interesting performers from a grade perspective.

USF made huge leaps in season one under Alex Golesh on offense, defensively it was an adventure on the back end of the defense as they were very thin thanks to poor recruiting and player development by the previous staff. The D-line when healthy and the LB play when healthy was actually pretty good. Almost the entire secondary was overhauled in the offseason.

USF had the 105th ranked offense per PFF with a 67.1 PFF score, the 56th rushing offense at 86.2 and the 72nd ranked passing offense grade of 67.3. The reason why they were 67.1 overall was poor pass/run blocking and average receiving grades.

USF was actually higher up in PFF offensive grades in 2022 because the O-line was better which exposed kind of a weird aspect of the PFF grading system.

Here is a look at the overall grade
QB- Byrum Brown 75.0
RB- Nay'Quan Wright 75.9

WR- Michael Brown Stephens 67.5
WR- Abdur-Rahmaan Yaseen 66.5 PFF in six games at Purdue
SLT- Sean Atkins 78.9
TE- Weston Wolff 46.1
LT- R.J. Perry 41.5
LG- Andrew Kilfoyl 52.3
C- Mike Lofton 50.6
RG- Zane Herring 63.9
RT- Derek Bowman 56.5

The skill numbers are good, the O-line is still a rebuilding situation. Losing Donovan Jennings hurts with this group.

DE- Jason Vaughn 76.2
NT- Doug Blue Eli 62.6
DT- Rashad Cheney 66.7
RE- D.J. Harris 60.6
MLB- Mac Harris 65.4
WLB- Jhalyn Shuler 76.1
NB- D'Marco Augustin 73.3 at Youngstown State

CB- Aamaris Brown 68.1
CB- Brent Austin 73.3 at JMU
S- Logan Berryhill 56.3
S- Kajuan Banks 67.0 at South Carolina

FOOTBALL USF PFF Gradebook, Snaps and other notes from the loss to Miami

As always a PFF grade of 60 is considered average, 10+ snaps is the margin where you can actually draw conclusions from things and penalties weigh big against positions.

QB Byrum Brown 62.1 PFF in 61 snaps, 65.1 run grade and 54.9 pass, 90.1 NFL QBR his second best this season behind last week's game.

QB Bryce Archie 44.3 PFF in 21 snaps, 57.3 run grade, 45.7 pass, 44.6 NFL QBR. It was a rough day for Archie when he came in against that level of competition.
