Wednesday morning I texted with someone in the USF Athletic Department to learn what the AAC policy was for returning to practice after a pause due to positive Covid test results among Tier 1 members of a program. The response I received caught me off guard.
"There is no set rule." Rather "it is all dependent on local public health guidance."
So, I asked based on what they knew about their local public health guidance when they thought the MBB team will be back in the gym.
At 10:54 a.m. the answer I received was, "All depends on if any more positives pop. It’s almost like death by 1000 paper cuts. If one pops it can extend the contact tracing which if it puts us under the 7 player threshold then we can’t play. So in short it changes every day. We are hoping to be able to get enough people in the gym to prepare for our Feb. 3 game but we don’t know yet. Hopefully some medical meetings in next few days will help clear it up."
At 12:02 p.m. I received an email from the USF MBB Sports Information Director that the games at Tulsa on Wednesday, Feb. 3 and SMU on Saturday, Feb. 6 have been postponed as a result of COVID-19 protocols within the program.
So, the Bulls need to get to the 7 player threshold. Imagine if the seven healthy players are Murphy, Collins, Castaneda, Chaplin, Williams, Anderson and Calleja. Or what about the seven healthy players being Oduro, Akec, Tchewa, Durr, Yetna, Calleja and Anderson. Either way, they would have to play.
Meanwhile the coaching staff has been coming to their offices every day.
