HOOPS RECRUITING Coaches on the recruiting trail

As I mentioned in the Karter Knox thread, USF assistant coach Jason Slay did an in-school visit with the five-star prospect at Tampa Catholic early this morning. I've also learned that Slay stopped by King HS (Tampa) today (now word on who he watched but the scuttlebut is that King has a 6-foot-5 kid transferring in...that is literally all I know at this point) and on Monday Slay stopped by IMG Academy to see 2023 four-star power forward Jayden Hastings and 2024 small forward Khani Rooths.

I heard from a source today that Brian Gregory will fly to Georgia tomorrow, after the Carl Cherenfant official visit ends, to do a school visit with 2023 forward Jaiun Simon. If you recall, Simon was one of two prospects who took an official visit to USF this past weekend.

The other prospect who visited this past weekend is 2023 power forward/center Anthony Robinson. Larry Dixon will fly to North Carolina to see Robinson at the Christ School in Arden.

FOOTBALL Jeff Scott post game presser (Houston)

Opening comments: First of all, congratulations to Houston. Got a really good team. Quarterback is exceptional player. They played very well tonight and that really overall was the story of the day them being able to go for 300 yards and just couldn't, couldn't get enough of a pass rush on him and gave him too long to be able to sit back there and let the plays develop and they got to good skill players out there, receivers, to give him as much time as we did. And just a combination of them doing a really good job making plays and us not being able to finish those plays defensively.

Offensively, you know overall for Trey Marsh's first start, you know, 24 of 34 to 75 and a touchdown and protecting the football. It was really a difficult defense to go against for your first start of the season, but he did a lot of things well.

You know, our guys are disappointed and it's not very complicated, but the end of the day their guys executed. They were, obviously, coached better and can play better and they made the plays. There were times we had guys in position and their guy came down with the ball and he made the play. So, for us, you know, we've got to come back and learn from video and put that behind us and really get ready to go play Temple next week. Still got four games left, and we'll put all of our attention into Temple whenever we get back on Sunday night.

OT: Football on the other side of the planet

While it's no secret that Japan has long had competitive Professional and college football, I've never seen good video of football in Japan. Well, that wait is over. I discovered this enjoyable video of the Kansai Kaisers face off against the Kyoto Gangsters. It's mostly highlights and Kansai won handily. I was impressed by the coaching for Kansai. I was also laughing my butt off at the commentary (I know enough Japanese to understand quite a bit of what was said).

Hey Russ

I went to ISU's Exhibition game against the College of Wooster today. Got to see Joe Petrakis play for the Redbirds. He is the big guy from Western Carolina that the USF staff was interested in last spring. He hit three threes which is what he is supposed to be able to do. His interior defense wasn't great today. Coach was not happy with all three big guys in their post defense today. Petrakis is a good player for ISU, but I am not sure he would have worked for the Bulls.

I am looking forward to seeing Emoni Bates play when Eastern Michigan comes to Normal in December. Now that Bates has overcome his legal issues he should be able to play against the Redbirds. It's great to have college hoops back again.

Normal

ECU 27 BYU 24

Keaton Williams stold the show. 21 carries for 178 yds and a TD. Ahlers had a pedestrian game (by his standards) but ECU's defense made several key stops to save the game for the Pirates. It was a good win for ECU and for the AAC too.

BYU has some nice pieces. Their O-line has 3 bonafied NFL draft picks in LT Blake Freeland, LG Clark Barrington and Center Connor Pay. Also QB Jaren Hall. The BYU defense has been their downfall. As USF knows the Cougars are hard to beat at home. ECU showed grit and determination. ECU coach Mike Houston looks like a keeper.

I was pulling for ECU like they were my team. They have a nice team. The Pirates stand 6-3 (3-2) and have 3 games remaining: After a bye next week ECU travels to Cincy on 11/11 for a Friday night tilt with the Bearcats on ESPN2, then they play Houston at home on 11/19 and Travel to Philly to close the season out with Temple on 11/26.

I see that USF offered Keaton Williams out of High School. This kid runs a 4.3 forty and is a bonafied NFL prospect and only 2 P5 teams offered him out of High School, Nebraska and WVU.

Game of the week on Rocky Top

At 7:00 PM on ESPN the #3 Tennessee Vols 7-0 (3-0) host the #19 Kentucky Wildcats %-2 (2-2). The Wildcats lost a 22-19 Heartbreaker at Ole Miss where QB Will Levis suffer a dislocated finger. The following week Levis was held out of the South Carolina game and the Wildcats lost to the Gamecocks 24-14 with freshman backup QB Kaiya Sheron under Center. Will Levis returned the following week and the Wildcats beat #16 Mississippi 27-17.

The Vols offense has been a juggarnaut. But Kentucky has a good defense and this is a border war like GA-FLA. Will Levis is close to 100%. This will be a great QB matchup between Levis and Hooker. I like UK to at least cover the spread. I think the Cats have a good chance to pull the upset.
