HOOPS D.J. Patrick update

Bulls forward D.J. Patrick missed the game vs. UAB due to an ankle injury. I didn't notice him wearing a boot but some guys wear an 'ankle boot' and that doesn't come far up the leg. He also had loose leg pants on so they might have covered the boot up. I also didn't notice him walking with a limp. I'm not expecting him to play against Saint Joseph's.

Projected Depth Chart

This seems to be the quietest I've ever seen any college being about it's potential depth chart. I'll take a stab at Week 1 just based on what I've read and try to go three deep or four where they might rotate. Happy to have it corrected by those with more information. Really just guessing on o-line and in the secondary- I have no idea where the newcomers are lining up and the roster is listing guys in strange places. I feel like Timarcus Simpson wouldn't have received a scholarship if he wasn't going to be playing. At RB, I think if Joiner were healthy, it would be a pretty clear hierarchy with Mangham and Joiner getting the lion's share, Battie up next, and Powell and Dukes fighting for scraps. I don't know if Dukes has been training at the slot- I thought that was the original plan.

QB: Bohanon, Marsh, Brown
Big RB: Mangham, Powell
Smaller RB: Battie, Dukes
X: X Weaver, Latrell Williams/K Brown
Y: Terry, Ajou, Willis
Slot: Horn, Dollison, Stanley
TE: Carter, Greenwald, Littlejohn, with Motillo for blocking
OT: Jennings, Bailey
OG: Harris, Perkins
C: Cecil, Best
OG: Hall or Lofton
OT: Jacobs, Kilfoyl

DE: Logan, Ross, Grant
DT: Cheney, J Wiliams, Matos
DT: Yates, Bags, Hobbs
DE: Hansford, Vaughn, Kelly, M Williams
LB: Boyles, Shuler, Harris
LB: Grier, Gordon, Norris
CB: C Williams, A Brown
NB: Will Jones, Stokes
S: Hill, LaPointe
S: Thornton, Robinson, Townsel
CB: D Evans, Timarcus Simpson, Knox

DT is the clear weak spot, but I think this is the first time in a few years that we can look at the groups and think that each one should at least be average for the conference. Beyond that, I really do think this is 30+ points per game offense. It might be a 28 PPG defense, but that'd be a big improvement.

FOOTBALL Injury update nugget

Kelly got an update on WR Xavier Weaver, who did not travel with the team to Tulsa. I'm posting instead of Kelly because he jumped on a flight from Raliegh to Atlanta.

Source told Kelly that Weaver was hurt but not injured and that it was Weaver's decision not to play at Tulsa. His availability for Saturday's game vs. UCF is yet to be determined at this point in time.

HOOPS Women’s Basketball Improves to 5-0 With a 66-59 Win at TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas (Nov. 20, 2022) — The University of South Florida women’s basketball team got 21 points from Elena Tsineke, 11 points and 10 rebounds from Carla Brito and 10 points from Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu as the Bulls handed TCU a 66-59 loss at Schollmaier Arena in the Maggie Dixon Classic. The win is South Florida’s fifth-straight to start the season while the Horned Frogs pull even at 2-2.

After going into the half tied with the Horned Frogs at 27-all, and holding a slight four-point edge at the end of the third quarter, 49-45, the Bulls opened the game up in the fourth quarter extending their lead to as many as 13 points, 58-45, midway through the final stanza on the second of two back-to-back layups by Fankam Mendjiadeu.

TCU, however, battled its way back cutting the South Florida lead down to two points, 58-56, with just over a minute left in the contest. That was as close as the Horned Frogs got as the Bulls closed out the game on an 8-3 run.

Notable

  • Sunday's starters for the Bulls were: G Elena Tsineke, G Aerial Wilson, G Sammie Puisis, F Carla Brito and F Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu … The Bulls are 5-0 with this lineup.
  • South Florida’s win over TCU improves the Bulls’ record against the Horned Frogs to 2-4 all-time … Sunday marked the first meeting between the two schools since March 4, 2005 (TCU W, 65-57).
  • Elena Tsineke’s 21 points against the Horned Frogs mark her 62nd career double-figure scoring game in her 85th career game with the Bulls.
  • Carla Brito tied her career-high with 19 rebounds.

Byrum Brown, the quarterbacks and the offense

It was a small sample size against a mediocre defense, but Byrum Brown provided the best quarterback play last night that we've seen since Blake Barnett. No one else since Blake, Bohanon included, has displayed that kind of touch and decision making. Brown appears to be better than Marsh already and should continue to develop as he gets more reps. Based on last night, I can't see how you could rule him out as a contender for QB1 next year. The shame of this disastrous season is that Travis Trickett has done a really solid job. The offense has mostly gotten better as the season has progressed, and last night's game plan may have been the year's best. Battie is a fierce competitor and a joy to watch.

Coach Brian Gregory's contract, and my issue with ADMK...

I posted this in another thread but realized it needed its own thread and discussion because this gets pretty deep and indirectly turns to damning assessment of ADMK.

I do think the BOT, President, and ADMK must truly consider terminating CBG's employment before conference play. As you will read and see in the links below there is no discernable reason to keep him around unless saving $250k for the foundation and USF Athletics in a buyout is the goal, but to get to that savings we have to wait to fire him until April 2nd, 2023, which is during the Final Four-- anyone want to guess how damaging that could be for us in a future coaching search?!?!
I think a lot will depend on the next 2 weeks. If we're winless heading into the St. Francis of Brooklyn game, then I see maybe 3-4 wins on the out-of-conference schedule. If last season is any indication, we won 5 out of conference games, and 3 conference. If we win 3-4 out-of-conference keeping him around is not improving the scenario, and there is no defensible justification for him to stay beyond December 31...get through the football coaching search and then fire CBG!

Now below is supposedly CBG's contract. Now I will say there is a real reason to fire him after April 1, 2023, and that is we save $250k. Here was the issue I had last year with the fact ADMK did not make that move...the buyout wasn't any lower from the year before. This is a very, very poor reflection on ADMK, because he's in a real quandary now, if he waits until after April 1, which would alleviate a $250k, that is the weekend of the Final Four. Essentially, he will have blown a full month on signing a good coach and hopefully staving off transfer disasters. Furthermore, this looks horrific because on April 1, 2023, CBG is also due a bump in pay, as well as his assistants, AND he is then qualified for bonuses APR bonus, GPA above 3.00. So, the fact ADMK did not act last year, when there was no difference in buyout, is a damning assessment of a very poor executive. That buyout responsibility looks to be amalgamated between the Foundation and USF Athletics. There is no additional buyout for the Foundation because within here it is articulated his additional compensation.

Read the fine print of the contract below guys...his base salary is $400k, and additional compensation was $600k in his first year. That is exactly what the Times article on his initial hiring stated. So this provides EXACTLY WHAT HE IS MAKING FROM THE FOUNDATION. For example, today he is still making $400k from the Athletic Department and $725k from the Foundation. There is no top secret buyout for the foundation. IT is all spelled out in his contract extension below. We can track this pretty easily. See below is the Times article when he was initially hired, he had a $400k base salary, and $600k additional compensation. As an employer and man that runs businesses someone did not accurately review his contractual obligations, and realize he received no net value from keeping CBG another year, and in fact would put himself in a real hiring burden if he did wait long enough to get the benefit of $250k in 2023. That is extremely negligence on the part of ADMK, because to me he had every justification and right to recommend termination last spring and choosing to keep CBG another season not only put the program further behind, but it also served no financial purpose. To me that was an emotional decision by ADMK, of which he should not have the luxury to make such a call on the dime of donor money. At this point the more I review this the more it becomes harder to justify ADMK's long-term future employment with USF Athletics. This is gross negligence of a CEO in my opinion.
