OT-T20 Cricket World Cup

USA beat Pakistan yesterday in a thriller. It was...not the expected result.

Biggest match of the tournament on Sunday, Pakistan vs. India in NYC (really Long Island). I look forward to Pakistan being completely Pakistani and stunning India after this shocking upset. I am sure that will spoil some Indian fans' days.

NIL

Some on here know that I coach. Today, the FHSAA sent us a survey about NIL for high school players. I said that it had no business at the high school level. It's not like my school (or majority of schools) is making money off players. This, imo, will just make factories like IMG and the private schools like CDS or whatever even more "rich" with talent because they'll be able to afford it to some degree. They'll be able to poach kids from certain schools in certain areas. Schools like where I coach (or most public schools) would never be able to pay NIL. I really hope they don't go this way or I'll probably have to step away from school ball.

USF Athletics Sees Nine Programs Log Perfect Single-Year Academic Progress Rate Scores

All programs post over a 965 multi-year mark, 13 over 974;

Five programs post perfect multi-year APR marks

TAMPA, JUNE 4, 2024 – University of South Florida Athletics continues to see student-athletes produce academic success at high levels as the Bulls had all 16 rated programs post a 965 or better multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR), including 13 over 974, when the NCAA released its most recent data.

With nine teams posting perfect single-year APR scores and five posting perfect multi-year scores, all of the Bulls teams were safely above the NCAA’s minimum APR standard score of 930. USF posted an overall average score of 989 for the 2022-23 academic year.

Six programs set or equaled a program record and 10 had multi-year scores over 990. The NCAA’s 2024 multi-year APR scores comprise data from the previous four academic years.

“USF student-athletes are accomplishing great things in the classroom as they pursue their academic goals and future aspirations,” Vice President of Athletics Michael Kelly said. “The student-athlete experience at USF is second to none. I am very proud of our commitment to academic success, the leadership of our Academic Services staff and coaches, and our outstanding academic facilities that continue to support success in the classroom.”

Men’s cross country, men’s tennis, women’s basketball, women’s golf and women’s tennis equaled program records by posting perfect multi-year scores of 1,000, while men’s soccer equaled its program-best posted last year with a score of 993.

It marked the 10th-straight and 13th overall perfect score for women’s golf, while women’s tennis posted its third-straight and 10th overall perfect score, men’s tennis its sixth, men’s cross country its fifth and women’s basketball its first.

Among the nine programs to post perfect single-year APR scores for 2022-23 were men’s cross country, men’s golf, men’s soccer, men’s tennis, softball, women’s basketball, women’s cross country, women’s golf, and women’s tennis. Meanwhile, the softball program (990) led by head coach Ken Eriksen continued a streak of a 990 or better multi-year score in every report since the NCAA began reporting APR in 2004-05.

USF Athletics saw all 18 men’s and women’s programs post a spring term grade-point average over 3.0 for just the second time on record as the Bulls extended their record streak of an overall department GPA over 3.0 to 19 consecutive semesters and nine years (since the spring of 2015) after the recently completed 2023 spring term.

USF saw 336 student-athletes earn Athletics Honor Roll recognition following the spring semester and 17 of 18 programs post a cumulative GPA over 3.0. The overall cumulative GPA for Athletics continued to move upward, checking in at 3.27 after a 3.23 in the fall and a 3.18 last spring. The Bulls saw 62 student-athletes graduate in the spring following 26 that did so in the fall.

FOOTBALL USF Ranked #88 in ESPN FPI

This puts us 5th in the American and projects out to a record of 7-5 and 5-3 in conference.

College football is all about if you have a quarterback, so there is some upside to this record if Brown can takes the next step.

Tampa Native AJ Newell Named Head Coach of University of South Florida Women’s Golf

Former LPGA Tour Player Previously Served As Michigan Assistant, Helping Lead The Wolverines To A Big Ten Title And The NCAA Finals

TAMPA, JUNE 3, 2024 – University of South Florida Vice President for Athletics Michael Kelly has named Tampa native AJ Newell, a former LPGA Tour Player and NCAA All-American, as head coach of USF women’s golf.

Newell will take over leadership of the Bulls’ program following a successful three-year stint as assistant coach at the University of Michigan, where she helped lead the Wolverines to three-straight NCAA Regional appearances, a 2022 Big Ten title, and the 2022 NCAA Championship Finals.

“We are thrilled to welcome AJ Newell to Team USF!” Kelly said. “AJ’s impressive background as an All-American player at the University of Tennessee, her professional experience on the LPGA Tour, and her successful tenure as an assistant coach at the University of Michigan make her a perfect choice to lead the USF Women's Golf program.

“AJ’s Tampa Bay roots and her time as a club professional at Pelican Golf Club uniquely position her to create real, authentic relationships with our players, donors and the community. Her passion for player development, leadership, and recruiting will continue our program's momentum and lift us to new heights.”

As a player, Newell earned NCAA All-America honors at the University of Tennessee, where she helped lead the Volunteers to the 2015 NCAA Finals match play round and finished seventh individually. She went on to a five-year professional career (2015-2020), making eight starts on the LPGA Tour in 2018 and playing in 35 events on the Symetra Tour (2016-20) before a back injury and subsequent surgery forced her retirement in 2020.

Before entering collegiate coaching at Michigan, Newell served as a golf professional at Pelican Golf Club (2020-21) in Belleair Beach, Fla. While leading more than 20 dedicated students, she also ran a summer golf camp for ages 6-15 and was instrumental in founding the Pelican Fitness Center.

She also volunteered and taught golf for many years (2011-21) with the First Tee program at Cheval Golf Club and Fox Hollow Golf Club in Tampa.

“I feel truly honored to return home to lead the South Florida women's golf team,” Newell said. “I would like to thank Vice President for Athletics Michael Kelly for this tremendous opportunity. His vision and support are evident in USF’s premier golf facilities and the commitment at every level to the success of the program, and will allow us to compete for championships.

“I would like to thank my husband, Dan, for his relentless support through the years. As a Tampa native, I am well versed in all that South Florida has to offer and look forward to returning to the community of Tampa Bay and getting to work! Go Bulls!”

Newell entered collegiate coaching as an assistant at Michigan (2021-24) in July 2021, joining head coach Jan Dowling, who coached her as an assistant at Tennessee. Serving as interim head coach in the spring of 2022 as Dowling took maternity leave, Newell led Michigan to the program’s first Big Ten title and an NCAA Finals appearance. During her tenure, Michigan made three straight NCAA regional appearances (2022, 2023 & 2024). She mentored 2022 All-American and future professional Ashley Lau, All-American and Big Ten Golfer of the Year Monet Chun, and All-Big Ten selection Hailey Borja.

During Newell’s four-year career at Tennessee (2012-15), she played in 38 career tournaments, posted seven top-10 finishes, and was named to the 2011 SEC All-Freshman Team while helping lead the Volunteers to four straight NCAA regional bids and two NCAA Finals appearances (2012 and 2015). As a senior in 2015, she earned Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-America honorable mention honors and tied for seventh at the NCAA Finals. That same season she earned her first collegiate victory at the Westbrook Spring Invitational and was the runner-up at the Golfweek Conference Challenge.

Newell was a member of UT’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and also assisted in teaching a Master of Business Administration program class designed to introduce female students to the fundamentals of golf to help them succeed in the business world. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Tennessee in communication studies, with a minor in journalism and electronic media, in 2015.

Following her collegiate career, Newell began teaching at Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn., and pursued playing professionally. She went on to make 13 cuts on the Symetra Tour, highlighted by a tie for fourth at the 2017 Fuccillo Kia Classic of New York and a seventh-place finish at the 2017 IOA Golf Classic. She also tied for 10th at the 2018 Murphy USA El Dorado Shootout.

Homeschooled and self-taught golf, Newell earned five varsity letters and was a captain for two years at Northside Christian High School in St. Petersburg, Fla. She closed her prep career leading Northside Christian to its second straight Class A runner-up team finish at the Florida Class A Championships, where she tied for third (73-68/141, -3) after finishing as the runner-up the year prior (70-72/142, -2) following a playoff for the state crown.

Newell is married to Dan Lavin. In her spare time, she is an avid student of history and World War II and visits historical sites while traveling.

FOOTBALL New kickoff times for the season

USF Football at Alabama Set for ESPN Prime Time; Several Kickoffs and TV Designations Announced

The American Athletic Conference announced kick times and TV designations for the first three weeks of the 2024 season and weekday prime time games

TAMPA, MAY 30, 2024 – The path for South Florida football in the 2024 USF Football season presented by Tampa General Hospital, its second under head coach Alex Golesh, became clearer Thursday when the American Athletic Conference announced kick times and television designations for the first three weeks of the season and weekday, prime time games.

Highlighting Thursday’s announcement for the Bulls was the designation of USF’s rematch with Alabama on Sept. 7 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. for a 7 p.m. kick on ESPN. The Bulls fell to the No. 10-ranked Crimson Tide, a 2023 College Football Playoff participant, 17-3 in a one-score game late in the fourth quarter in Tampa last year that drew 4.8 million viewers on ABC. It will mark USF’s second trip to Tuscaloosa, as the Bulls fell 40-17 in the first game of the 2003 season, USF’s third as a full FBS participant. Alabama leads the series, 2-0, and will be led by first-year Crimson Tide coach Kalen DeBoer.

Coming off a program-best six-game turnaround and a 45-0 Boca Raton Bowl rout of Syracuse in its first season under Golesh, USF will open the 2024 campaign with a 7 p.m. kickoff vs. Bethune-Cookman on Aug. 31 at Raymond James Stadium. That game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and will mark the first-ever meeting between the programs. Bethune-Cookman is led by former USF assistant coach Raymond Woodie.

The Bulls will travel to Southern Mississippi on Sept. 14 for a 7 p.m. kick on ESPN+. It will mark the Bulls’ third trip to Hattiesburg, Miss., but first since a 27-6 loss in 2003. The programs shared membership in Conference USA for two years (2003 & 2004) and have not met since a 27-20 Southern Miss win in Tampa in 2004. The Golden Eagles lead the series 3-1.

The Bulls’ two confirmed weekday, prime-time games also received their kickoff and television designations. USF’s Friday, Oct. 11 date vs. Memphis in Raymond James Stadium has been set for a 7 p.m. kick on ESPN, while the Bulls’ Friday, Nov. 1contest at FAU will kick at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN2. Memphis leads the series 8-4 and claimed a 59-50 shootout last year in Memphis. The Bulls lead the FAU series 3-2, but the Owls took a 56-14 victory in Tampa last year.

The remaining kickoff times and television designations for the 2024 season are expected to be made on a weekly basis through the season as part of the conference’s 12-day selection process. The most up-to-date schedule, with television designations, is available at GoUSFBulls.com.

Division I college athletes get permanent free agency

A consent decree announced Thursday makes that policy change permanent, allowing athletes to transfer an unlimited number of times without penalty. It also requires the NCAA to restore a year of eligibility for current athletes who missed a year of competition since 2019-20 due to the old policy.
