FOOTBALL RECRUITING Ranking the American (Week 4)

Figured I'd dust this off - feel free to chime in and debate.

There are 6 AAC schools that have yet to beat an FBS team this season and FAU's only win was against FIU, while UTSA's only win was against Kennesaw State which is in its 1st year of FBS. The bottom half of the league is some of the worst football you'll see in the G5 this season.

College Football Playoff Contender

1. Memphis (3-0, 0-0)
- should be favored in every game heading into their finale at Tulane; projected record: (11-1, 7-1)

Bowl Bound

2. Tulane (1-2, 0-0)
- two tough luck losses have likely derailed the Green Wave's CFP hopes; projected finish (10-2, 8-0)

3. Army (2-0, 1-0)
- without games against Memphis, Tulane or South Florida, Cadets could be 9-0 heading into their match up against Notre Dame at Yankee Stadium; projected record (11-1, 8-0)

4. South Florida (2-1, 0-0)
- a victory at home against Miami would vault USF into the CFP discussion; projected record: (8-4, 6-2)

5. East Carolina (2-1, 0-0)
- soft schedule could allow Pirates to fatten up on wins; projected record (9-3, 7-1)

On the Bubble

6. Florida Atlantic (1-2, 0-1)
- will likely need to win their last 3 to make a bowl game; projected finish (6-6, 5-3)

7. UAB (1-2, 0-0)
- strong effort at Arkansas separates the Blazers from the second division; projected record (6-6, 4-4)

8. North Texas (2-1, 0-0)
- have a tough 3-game stretch with Memphis, Tulane and Army beginning in late October; projected record: (5-7, 2-6)

Staying Home

9. Rice (1-2, 0-0)
- Owls averaging 10.5 ppg in two FBS games ; projected record (4-8, 3-5)

10. UTSA (1-2, 0-0)
- several toss up games will determine if Road Runners go bowling; projected record 4-8, 2-6)

11. Tulsa (1-2, 0-0) -
avoids Memphis and Tulane but wins are still hard to find; projected record (4-8, 2-6)

12. Navy (2-0, 1-0)
- soft schedule begins to firm up for Mid Shipmen; projected record: (4-8, 2-6)

13. Charlotte (1-2, 0-0)
- escaping with a win against Gardner-Webb may be Poggi's last win; projected record (1-11, 0-8)

14. Temple (0-3, 0-1)
- program should consider dropping down to the FCS level; projected record (0-12, 0-8)

FOOTBALL USF Football Rolls Past Southern Miss, 49-24

Bulls log 369 yards rushing, reel off 28 unanswered points

HATTIESBURG, MISS., SEPT. 14, 2024– The South Florida football team returned to Hattiesburg, Miss. for the first time in 21 years and found itself trailing 14-0 just eight minutes in before reeling off 28 unanswered points and rolling to a 49-24 victory over Southern Miss at M. M. Roberts Stadium.

The Bulls first-ever win in Hattiesburg came in the first meeting between the programs in 20 years. The Bulls outscored the Golden Eagles 49-10 over the final 52 minutes of play, racking up 562 yards of offense and 369 on the ground while collecting three turnovers.

USF now turns its attention to No. 10-ranked Miami and a highly anticipated ESPN primetime clash at Raymond James Stadium this Saturday.

Byrum Brown completed 19 of 29 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 72 yards and a touchdown. Kelley Joiner Jr. ran for 117 yards and two touchdowns and Nay’Quan Wright added 105 yards on the ground and a touchdown. Sean Atkins caught five passes for 87 yards to move into third on the USF career receptions chart with 134.

The Bulls took a 28-21 lead to the locker room and received the second half kickoff. Brown hit Atkins for a 35-yard gain into USM territory. John Cannon set up for a 37-yard field goal, but holder Ryan Bolduc lateralled the ball to Cannon who raced 17 yards to the USM3. Ta’Ron Keith punched it in for a 35-21 lead and the Bulls were rolling in the second half, outscoring USM 21-3.

USM quarterback Ethan Crawford drove the Golden Eagles into USF territory. USM converted a 4th-and-1 at the USF31 with Crawford hitting Reed Jesiolowski for a 26-yard gain to the USF5. Two plays later, Mac Harris it Crawford on his release and Doug Blue-Eli made a diving catch of the fluttering ball to collect USF’s second turnover of the game.

The Bulls took over on the USM7 and went 93 yards for a touchdown, capping the drive with a 33-yard touchdown run from Nay’Quan Wright for a 42-21 lead.

The Bulls were driving into USM territory again when the Golden Eagles forced a fumble after an Atkins reception. USM quickly moved to the USF6, but the Bulls defense stiffened, including a sack from Kajuan Banks, and forced a 42-yard field goal attempt that missed wide left.

Joiner iced the game with a 50-yard burst up the middle for a 49-21 lead with 9:25 to play.

USM scored first on the night, taking the opening kickoff and then driving 87 yards for a touchdown. A big throwback pass to the quarterback Tate Rodemaker moved the ball 42 yards to the USF45. Five plays later, Rodemaker hit Kyirin Heath for a 19-yard touchdown pass and a 7-0 lead.

On the Bulls opening possession, Brown produced a 28-yard run to the USM40, but the Bulls faced a fourth-and-four at the 34 and were stopped as Eagles flooded the backfield.

USM promptly drove 65 yards in seven plays and led 14-0 after Rodemaker’s 37-yard screen pass to Kenyon Clay for the Golden Eagles second score.

Brown brought the USF offense back out at the USF35 and moved quickly into USM territory. After a 37-yard touchdown pass to Michael Brown-Stephens was called back due to offsetting penalties, the Bulls found themselves in a fourth-and-five at the 21. Brown hit Atkins for the first down and the Bulls got on the board when Brown hit Payten Singletary with a short touchdown pass.

Southern Miss moved into USF territory again before DeShawn Rucker forced a fumble and Caqavouis Berryhill returned it to the USM37, shifting the momentum. After a missed trick play and a five-yard penalty, Kelley Joiner bolted through the line for a 42-yard touchdown that tied the game at 14.

The Bulls defense forced the first USM punt of the game and Brown led the Bulls 72 yards for a touchdown, hitting Josh Hardeman on a 3-yard fade in the corner of the endzone. The tough catch gave the Bulls a 21-14 lead.

A 39-yard punt return from Atkins gave the Bulls the ball on the USM17. Brown went up the gut for a 16-yard run and two plays later plunged in from a yard out to give the Bulls a 28-14 lead.

USM switched quarterbacks to Crawford, who quickly hit Tiaquelin Mims for a 56-yard gain. Three plays later he ran in from eight yards out to end the USF scoring surge and make it 28-21.

FOOTBALL Golesh media quotes looking at Southern Miss, recapping Bama

Golesh said the loss to Alabama was disappointing in every imaginable way with how they finished. How they finished. They talk about winning in the margins, 3rd down, red zone, penalities especially pre-snap and post-snap, turnovers, and for 54 minutes of that game some of it was really good and some wasn't. They've got to get in the red zone(tight zone) and get touchdowns. They have to be better on 3rd downs, they were 2-20 on 3rd/4th downs and really long situations most of the night. 1st and 2nd down were behind the sticks. They created three turnovers between special teams and defense and got off the field on 3rd down on D. When they are on the road against a really good team, the margins are tiny. They all have to go your way and between what they did offensively and how they finished it didn't.

You can have any storyline, there wasn't anything that Bama did different, they just lost composure in every imaginable way in terms of fitting that exact same run. We backed off at CB instead of pressed up like they had all night. That combination of guys trying to make a play, the kids played hard, taking it into your own hands outside of the scheme or lose confidence in a certain technique, that is what they attacked on Sunday like crazy. That is the growth area as a team as those margins shrink they've got to be perfect and they were not, so it was disappointing.

There were positives and that is the easy thing to say. We played really well for a while, but going back to expectations, they expect to win the games on the schedule. He said with humility that coaching those final 6:41 of the game is also critical and there were a couple of things on my side I didn't do well. We went back and coached the heck out of it and we were incredibly real with our guys and they took our coaching in all three phases. We gave up a long punt return that kind of led into all of that, that hasn't been our M.O. That is also the margin he is talking about. It is the fine detail of winning a game like that and they came up short.

The challenge is to turn the page and yesterday when they got on the field they turned to Southern Miss to a place only three people in our building have been to. Against a team that you look at that is well-coached and play hard. Defensively a veteran bunch with 10 seniors that play really hard. Offensively the QB (Tate Rodemaker) who was at FSU a year ago and played their last three games who is really an accurate passer and has good command two games into the offense. They are solid on special teams and they have an elite returner who was all-conference.

Our practice was really good and we were energized and they were pleased with how we approached things, flipping the page and moving on. This is a challenging week to go back on the road and play a team record wise, you can say what you want, they play hard and new coordinators again on both sides, so you watch other tape than the what you got and we have to coach well in all three phases.

On Byrum Brown struggling passing, I think a chunk of that goes on us as coaches that, we did a good job getting him in a rhythm and we are a tempo offense and there is a rhythm to that and playing QB there is a rhythm to that. When you aren't getting a ton going on first down and you are sitting in second down, he can hand it off. When had the ball in his hands running he was so good so you are trying to gauge how many hits I want him to take. A lot on us as coaches, the first drive he was in a rhythm and then we didn't do a good job of that. We tried to get him going with shots vertically and you get behind those guys and don't connect, you keep talking we are inches away, more so it is on us to get him in a rhythm. Our WRs played really hard but they have really good DBs and LBs and those windows are tighter, quicker and faster, I would take all the blame not getting him in a rhythm to execute. He was 3rd and long all night. You look at the call sheet midway through the game and we hadn't used any of our third and short plays or 3rd and medium plays. Literally. You are 15 3rd downs in and they are all long, that is hard to get in a rhythm. Third and medium and you can get it out quick, you can get in a rhythm. We didn't play-action pass as much as we wanted to so that doesn't get him in a rhythm. The pass efficiency deal I get, but he didn't turn the ball over and he wasn't careless with the ball and he gave our receivers a chance to make a play on it. I thought he was efficient in the situations.

On the hits on Brown, I thought he got down when he needed to, he is a hard tackle. The one hit, I thought okay, man. But we were moving the football and we have to be smart with the type of hits he takes. He wasn't standing in the pocket getting shelled as a runner you protect himself, the one hit that was a targeting I thought man, he feels great and he was physically ready.

On the missed vertical passes, protection was really good, he just missed those. Those should be 75-80% balls in our offense and they weren't He has a great arm and overthrew two of them, the challenge to him is to throw it far and we go get it.

Defense so far this year

The defense looked much better until the last 6 minutes Saturday.
Don't know how we do the rest of the year but right now the improvement from 2 years ago is mind boggling.

2022: Defense gave up 9.03 yards per pass attempt; 6.12 yards per rush; and, an average of 7.43 yards per play.
2023: Defense gave up 8.06 yards per pass attempt; 4.06 yards per rush; and, an average of 6.07 yards per play. If you take out Syracuse it's 8.18/4.41/6.34.
2024 through 2 games: Defense gave up 5.37 yards per pass attempt; 2.97 yards per rush; and, an average of 3.97 yards per play. Currently sitting at 16th in the country in yards per play allowed.

Bama averaged a total of 5.77 yards per play, but up to the last 3 possessions it was 4.26.

Brown and something to watch

Probably doesn’t mean much and yes haters will bitch because it doesn’t fit the narrative but I think Brown has a sophomore slump or something as he looks to be really struggling throwing the ball

Pre-game vs BCC he looked bad. Missing guys, throwing behind, etc.

BCC game he missed several throws

Pre-game Bama I did not pay attention

Bama between series when he would warm up throwing to a receiver that was catching for Archie who would then throw back….Brown’s receiver was constantly having to reach or move whereas Archie’s receiver was able to stay stationary. These are easy throws but Brown seemed to struggle to deliever the ball to the target.

Bama game, yes it was a very talented D but he missed several wide open throws even when not hurried. Overthrew two likely TDs and threw behind many receivers. Had opportunities to throw the ball away a few times and ate it. Should have been picked a few times.

Not bitching about him but he definitely dies not seem to be the Brown I was expecting and looks like me has regressed from last season.

We’ve got to find a way to get him on track. Calling 5 or 6 straight runs for him is not going to continue to work. We’ve got to get the long ball working and get the shorter timing routes cleaned up.

I will complain about the play calling though. It leaves a lot to be desired. Need to incorporate a slant or some other quick shots inside the 5. We can’t continue with the runs up the middle from the 5 crap.

I feel sorry for our D who just got wore out. Down 1 in the 4th told my wife we’d lose by 3 scores as you could see the D wilting. Not fair to them that the offense is not carrying their own weight.
