HOOPS Brian Gregory talks loss to Auburn

BG: I think tremendous effort, obviously 20 offensive rebounds. We out rebounded them on the offensive end by five. They press the whole game. We play solid man to man, they have 20 turnovers against our solid man to man we have 17 against their full court press. We did a lot a lot of good things. Tremendous effort on the offensive glass, tremendous effort in transition -- 16 fast break points.

Guys, you got to make your free throws man. I mean, everybody out there is going to, you know, say whatever, but you got to make two free throws. Lost two games because we're shooting 50% from the free throw line. And Tyler Harris is good shooter Chap shoots the free throw line good. So Miguel does. You know we shoot a lot of them so we just got to keep plugging away because it's disappointing.

But I thought in the second half they did a little better job on the offensive glass. I think they got nine in the second half. And some big ones. But you know hard fought game on the road in a hostile environment. Disappointed no doubt about it. But we got to learn from this one. And we have no time to lick our wounds. You got to turn right back around and play a team that just beat Florida State. So that's the way it goes early in the year. It's gonna take us a little time to you know, guys tightened in some stuff up in the system. But we'll get there for sure.

On how frustrating is the three point shooting...

Yeah, you're not gonna get a lot of clean looks against Auburn, you know what I mean? I thought Tyler had some clean ones. We got to get him going. He had some he had some clean ones. We shot a couple of them a little too fast. You know, they were 5-of-25 from the three. So I mean, it's two hard nosed defensive teams going after each other. So, yeah, I mean, we gotta the ball better and when we don't we gotta be better attacking offensive glass. You know, Auburn last year won a lot of games. They didn't have one guard shoot over 40% from the field or 33% from the three and multiple guards in the 20s. But what they do is they are relentless on the offensive glass and that gives you more freedom to be streaky from the perimeter.

On Auburn's pressure defense...

Well, I think that one of the big things was when Tyler picked up his fourth foul. That was critical because he was able to get the ball and he was able to get us into whatever we were trying to run. You know, again, I think we got to enjoy your 100% right on the threes, but we got to finish some plays around the basket too. You know, we had we had multiple plays around the basket either on a post up one-on-one in the post or some put backs and some layups. So you got you got to finish those plays. You know, we shoot 35% They end up shooting 40% Because they shot better in the second half. But you know it's about putting the ball in the basket and we just got to do we got to do a better job of that we got to finish plays around the basket. When you get open shots you got to you got to bury some of them and when you go to the free throw line you got to make it's not that it's not that hard. We're we could be become an elite defensive team and rebounding team sort of fast break points are going to be critical, critical for us. And we got to get a couple guys off the snide when it comes to making some open shots.

Call me petty, but…

Coach Scott posting family photos with his children in Clemson gear doesn’t sit well with me. It shows a lack of dedication and true passion for USF from the outside looking in. All that US2F talk seems disingenuous when you get little glimpses like this. If you are the head coach at USF, you should not be representing another university no matter what. Maybe he should just go back…

FOOTBALL American Athletic Conference Announces Football Scheduling Model for 2023-26 Seasons

IRVING, Texas – American Athletic Conference Commissioner Mike Aresco has announced the four-year football scheduling model for conference games that will be in place for the 2023-26 seasons.

The scheduling model was unanimously approved by The American’s athletic directors this week.

The 2023 season will be The American’s first with 14 football-playing institutions. The schedule format calls for each team to play eight conference games each year. Each team will face the other 13 conference teams at least twice during the four-year cycle – once at home and once on the road.

Six matchups will be played annually in this cycle: North Texas-SMU, UAB-Memphis, Rice-UTSA, Charlotte-East Carolina, Florida Atlantic-South Florida and Navy-Temple.

“This scheduling model fulfills all of the objectives that we identified as we look forward to competition among our 14 outstanding teams,” said Aresco. “Most important, it is a fair model that has the unanimous support of our athletic directors. It allows for all four-year student-athletes to play at all of our venues at least once during their careers. It reestablishes some longstanding geographic rivalries and provides a foundation for new rivalries to develop. It also provides all of our teams with annual access to the state of Texas and other important recruiting areas.”

The American will not have a divisional format during the four-year cycle. The top two teams in the final regular season standings will qualify for the American Athletic Conference Championship Game.

The 2023 conference schedule will be announced following the completion of the 2022 season.
