This Friday, June 15, is the start of the first USF Team Camp with Brian Gregory as head coach. The camp includes 79 high school teams and one AAU team for a total of 80 teams. Teams are coming from as far south as Miami, as far north as Jacksonville and, of course, there will be plenty of Bay Area teams participating. There will be a couple of Polk County teams but only one team from the three counties that make up the Orlando Metro Area (my guess is most of those schools are spending their money on the UCF camp).
Something positive is definitely happening with the program.
The UF team camp usually has 70-80 teams from Florida and some from Georgia, but to the best of my knowledge, none of the Team Camps USF held while Orlando Antigua was head coach had more than 35 teams.
According to a source USF MBB Director of Operations Jarrod Lazarus -- camps are basically put together by the "Ops Guy" -- began working on this camp in mid February.
For those who are not familiar with Team Camps, they do a few very positive things:
-Generate some revenue for the program
-Gets some H.S. Coaches on campus to see the facilities and the school + get to know the USF Coaching Staff better (there's usually a coach's dinner on Saturday night)
-Gets some kids on campus that USF is interested in seeing, or seeing more of. (Games in the practice facility and Sun Dome will be recorded).
I'll be at the camp all weekend.
