FOOTBALL Breaking down Alex Golesh's first spring practice presser

Our new intern, @jackward9 attended Alex Golesh's first press conference of spring practice and gives his takes on CAG's answers. Our intent is to turn these around in a more timely fashion but between the basketball transfer portal and the basketball coach search I've been pretty swamped and just got around to reviewing what Jack sent me.

TAMPA, Fla. – South Florida held its first spring practice on Monday afternoon on March 6. Tuesday afternoon head coach Alex Golesh spent some time answering questions from local reporters. Here’s a transcript of what he said and what I think it means.

From his opening statement...

“The challenge to those guys after practice was simply to keep the energy through 15 practices. I think its easy day one. I challenge them what is two look like what is three look like? And then what is practice 13, 14 look like? You know, there's not really a game you're getting ready for there'll be a spring scrimmage, but there's really still no light at the end of the tunnel. So it's still focused on us and our process and how we go about doing things and the challenge for us as a staff is to clean up the cleanup the practice. Coach our tails off and keep moving forward. We got two more practices this week.

Jack's take: Having good energy and consistency was a point that Golesh emphasized Tuesday when talking about his players. It’s easy to see that this team has been lacking both the last few seasons and we will see if his guys step up to the challenge he has laid out for them. Spring is mostly getting a feel for things, so he is taking everything he sees with a grain of salt, trying to pinpoint who is going to stay focused and consistent with nothing to play for yet.

On guys that surprised him so far...

“Yeah, to be honest, the I think the guys that didn't play last year or played minimal snaps you really don't know what you have. You've seen him through winter workouts. You've seen him through competition drills. But until you lined up and you put pads on, it's really, really hard. Try not to pass judgment on young guys and young guys will grow in the offseason. So it was really it was really good to see some guys run around in a competitive environment that way but in reality until you put pads on and get hit a couple of times how you respond to that is that's what I'm excited to see and Friday will be the first day of pads on they won't be till the week after spring break that gets see some guys get tackled same bounced up and but certainly you were hoping some guys step up there's a bunch of spots where we need some depth and some guys to step up.”

Jack's take: It’s still really early in the spring. When the players are able to put the pads on is when evaluation gets easier, so while there were some guys that looked good out there to Coach, it’s going to be hard to single a guy out that wowed him.

On how optimistic he is for the depleted offensive line...

“I was really, really impressed with what that group looked like in day one, I think I think Hoody and his crew have done a really good job through these first eight weeks of the semester. Getting those guys ready schematically. For what was about to come. They weren't shocked by the tempo. They weren't shocked by how fast it was all happening. You know, it was it was really, really good to see that. Really there's 13 guys going through spring so it's not it's not a huge group of guys you want to be right around 16 to 20 But I thought they handled it really well was really good to see that group.”

“I thought RJ Perry at times flashed like I said he flashed I mean, Nikola Milovac, like for a freshman from Serbia, I was really impressed with him.”

“But really that that whole group I thought did a really good job again, no pads on so you're seeing how fast they're playing. You're seeing guys come off the ball, but you're not finishing anybody you know, from a past pro standpoint, are guys running by you or are guys just running free? Didn't see that. So I was really impressed with that group.”

Jack's take: This group was hit hard by graduations and transfers, and it’s a great sign that they are getting used to the offense this early. Perry, a junior that followed Golesh over from Tennessee, stands at 6’6 325 pound and should compete for a role in this unit along with Milovac. Again it’s going to take a few weeks to really tell anything with this group, so we will see.

On the wide receiver room...

“I think in what we do on offense, that is generally the group that's going to take a second. It is happening really fast, like really fast for those guys. So I would say probably hold judgment here for a couple of weeks and see that group. It's not a very thick group. We've got you know, we've got three more guys, young guys that are coming in in May, which will give us some more depth.”

Jack's take: This unit was also hit hard by players leaving. There were a few receivers that transferred in, most notably Seth Jones reuniting with quarterback Gerry Bohanon from their Baylor days. Along with losing receiving coach after receiving coach this offseason, it has yet to be seen if this group will have good depth this upcoming fall.

HOOPS Coach Search Rumor Mill No. 4

I'm going to start off telling you today's entry is going to contain a whole lot of speculation on my part. The truth is, that's what is mainly available right now. We're confident former Notre Dame Head Coach Mike Brey and former Missouri Head Coach Cuonzo Martin are candidates with traction for this job. That does not mean Michael Kelly is not strongly considering other candidates. He certainly is.

I think the circle of people who really know what's going on in this search is very, very small. In fact, it may not even be a circle. It may just be a triangle consisting of Kelly, Lee Butler and Rhea Law. Even if there are people outside of those three with insight, they really aren't sharing it. At this point in searches, you usually at least see some agent planted leaks with national media. We have seen one – Mike Brey.

Anyway, on to my read on what's happening:

There's a natural ebb and flow to almost every coaching search. Here's how it goes:

Day 1-3: "Take some home run swings." We've saw that as Rick Pitino’s name clanged around in the discussion of the USF basketball search. But that is over now.

Day 4-7: "It looks like a list of rising young head coaches, someone with connections to the school, and some head coaches who were fired or stepped down." This is where people start to assume the home run swings didn't connect and a lengthy search is more likely. We entered this stage a few days ago.

Day 8-11: The first weekend of the NCAA tournament is over and the season of most of the targets has ended. Zoom interviews and in-person interviews begin to happen. Also, a new name that none of us are talking about that is going to surprise everyone when it leaks often comes out. We are now in this stage of the search.

Day 11-15: "What the hell are we doing? Are we even going to hire anybody or are we just going to let every other school in America fill its coaching vacancy while we sit here and let the program rot and hire the last man standing?" This is the panic stage.

Somewhere around day 15: They hire a coach, most often probably one that has been mentioned as a potential candidate all along, but every now and then a complete shock.

I’m confident that USF has started talking to candidates on the phone and possibly even virtually. If it is going to be either Brey or Martin, all you're really doing is seeing if either of them will accept your offer or if there is an offer either of them will accept. You don't need to go through a full interview and ask them for a six-step plan to fix your program. They are established coaches who have already won at a higher level. Obviously there needs to be a meeting of some sort just to make sure all the personalities mesh and everything, but the interview process for a proven high major coach should be different than the one for a mid-major guy on the way up. You don't need to put him through the same steps you do the younger, less proven guy.

Bob Richey: His season is over, he makes some sense to me, we have heard his name frequently during the search, but he inherited a very healthy Furman program from Niko Medved. A program that Richey had been part of for several years as the top assistant. He has never worked outside of South Carolina. Is he a turnaround guy?

Amir Abdur-Rahim: I heard his name early in this process but I don’t feel he is as involved as Brey or Martin but I know he is at least being considered. His season ended Friday.

Richie Riley: Pretty much the same as Abdur-Rahim. His season ended in his conference tournament final.

Bob Marlin: He is a name that none of us were talking about until Monday afternoon. Marlin is currently a free agent as he was in the final year of his Louisiana contract. His AD announced that he plans to offer an extension, but that only happened because Louisiana made the tournament. I’m told that he is very interested in the USF job and we confirmed that he is a USF target.

Chris Capko: He is very happy at USC but he wants the USF job badly. We might not hear him linked with other jobs the cycle and national reporters may not even put Capko and USF together but there is mutual interest. At this point it seems most of the interest is Capko’s in USF.

Charlton “CY” Young: This is a name I’ve heard quite a bit, even before the Bulls season was over. It makes sense that USF will look at him. I don't have any info, yet, but now that Missouri’s season is over I'd bet he gets a phone call, a zoom and possibly an in-person interview.

Justin Gainey: Similar to Young, this is a name I’ve heard quite a bit, especially in the last four days and we confirmed that he is a USF target. Other programs are interested in Gainey too. Tennessee advanced to the Sweet 16 so it could be a while before any in-person meeting with USF takes place.

Barring a new candidate popping up out of nowhere, I believe USF’s next coach will be one of the coaches in this Rumor Mill. But I need to stress, that's based more on logic and my opinion than it is any real concrete information at this point.

Richey, Marlin, Riley and Abdur-Rahim are at schools where there’s no Rivals site. Brey and Martin are former coaches. That makes it a little more difficult for me to find sources on the other side of things to get info. I’m pretty certain that if I call someone at the USC site and mention Capko, the response I get will be “Who?”

We might start to get some agent leaks to the media to get their guy's name out there either to promote him for the job or get his name out there to drive interest in other jobs (or both). We'll do our best to see what we can dig up

FOOTBALL RECRUITING Recruiting Notes 3/19

USF re-offered RB Carlos Mitchell (Lake Wales, FL) and he is expected to visit again soon.

WR B.J. Gibson (Wilcox County- Rochelle, GA) dropped his top 13 including USF on Friday. The Bulls are one of two outliers on the list.

A transfer LB visited last Saturday Khalib Gilmore from West Florida a likely PWO option.

This week visitors will amp back up. There are a lot of kids planning to come to USF in April in particular and we will keep track of those visits as well.

The staff are pushing hard for DT Jahari Grant (Treasure Coast- Port St. Lucie, FL) and DE Tyshon Reed (Colquitt County- Moultrie, GA) lately. They would like to get on the board with the first defensive commit soon.

HOOPS Coach Search Rumor Mill No. 3

This is a mini-Rumor Mill because I’ve got a Rivals transfer portal meeting in less than 10 minutes then I have to leave for Orlando for the NCAA tournament.

A very reliable and connected source spoke to someone who is in touch with Rick Pitino. That person told my source that Pitino-to-USF “ain’t happening. Pitino wants a job with lots of exposure. He can always visit Florida and his friend Chris Sullivan, like he has been doing.”

My source also spoke with someone who talked to Tennessee Associate HC Justin Gainey. Gainey confirmed to this person that he is involved with USF and that he has spoken with someone (no name given) at USF. Gainey told my source’s guy that the USF search is “wide open” and that he expects USF to hold as many as “ten interviews.”

My source’s guy also spoke with USC Associate HC Chris Capko and confirmed that Capko is involved with USF.

My source’s guy also confirmed that former Missouri head coach Cuonzo Martin is in the mix with USF.

Seth Greenberg has to be happy

His Alma Mater !6 seed Farleigh Dickinson beat 1 seed Purdue 63-58. This is only the 2nd time this has happened in tournament history. The Knights are the shortest mid major team to boot. Purdue got out coached and outplayed. They couldn't handle the Knights speed and pesky defense.

Penny Hardaway lost to future rival Dusty May's FAU Owls 66-65. Worst of all the Tigers lost by their old bugaboo of untimely turnovers when the game is on the line.

Sunday 3/19 #16 FDU vs #9 FAU. The winner moves on to the sweet 16.

Rick Pitino's Iona just didn't have the depth to hang with UCONN, The Huskies are very good.
