HOOPS Around the World of College Basketball

(On court Basketball only)

All the teams in the American are off to a good start except for USF(only winless team). Rice (1-1) beat FIU and loss a close one to FSU. Charlotte(1-1) beat Presbyterian and got destroyed by Utah State. Preseason conference favorite UAB was stunned by a loss to Vermont, but has 2 wins over Southern Miss and SE Louisiana fairly easy. Strong start for Lendeborg. He leads the Blazers in all 5 major categories, pts, rebs, assts, stls, and blocks per game. The guy is a monster. UAB won’t win a game without him. The most notable wins in the AAC so far are by Memphis who is 2-0 despite the usual turmoil for Penny’s team. They beat Missouri in a home game, and UNLV on the road. The most impressive team imo is Florida Atlantic who I had rated higher than most others. FAU has a new HC and literally loss their entire team, but I was high on the new coach who came in and didn’t complain, just went to work. FAU added 11(wow) new players plus a whole new coaching staff this offseason. So far they look good and haven’t skipped a beat. Great job by the guys in Boca. Tulsa, WSU, ECU, UNT, Tulane, and UTSA are are undefeated but untested.
Note: Tulsa beat UAPB 104- 80 yesterday. USF host the Golden Lions in the home opener Tuesday.

Top 25 news

Kansas is the No. 1 team and just came off an awesome contested game against #11 UNC.

#6 Gonzaga could go undefeated in their league(again) they just destroyed then #8 Baylor 101 - 63! You just don’t see that kind lopsided win against a fellow top 10 team, at least in men’s basketball. To Baylor’s credit they came right back to beat Calipari’s #16 Razorbacks team 72-67.

Karter Knox note:
Averaging 2.5 pts, 3 rebs, 0.5 asst, and shooting only 28% FG. He is the 8th man in minutes on a 9 man rotation that Calipari is only using so far.

#9 Auburn went to #4 Houston and won 72-67 in a hard fought war. That is the best win on the any top 25 team imo because it is hard to beat the Cougars at their place. Love him or hate him, Bruce Pearl’s teams are just amazing to watch and always good. I have never cared for the man’s character but as a Head Coach, he has been one of the best a long time.

#10 Tennessee routed Louisville 77-55, throwing water on the Cardinals faithful who thought their team was ready for big time. No so fast my friend!
Kasean Pryor Note: just like the entire Cardinals team, that step up in competition against the Vols cooled the fire a little. One made FG(6pts) 2rebs, 3 TOs

USF research record

We climbed another 7% after our monster jump last year and ended at $738 million in research funding.
When we hit $1 Billion, it puts us in a very elite group… and we’re growing quick. That AAU is coming in quite handy.

FOOTBALL 2024-2025 CFP

"SMU edges Alabama for final College Football Playoff spot"

I hate a lot of what's happened to college football, but I love the new model. I never thought in a million years that an SMU would get chosen before Alabama. I look forward to the games and hope somehow the underdogs can make some noise this year!

HOOPS Updated NET Rankings (12/8)

We jumped from #194 to #172 with the road loss at Loyola-Chicago. Here are our updated results and upcoming games by quad. Webber International is an NAIA school and not listed below.

As of this morning, NET has the AAC has a 1-bid league and ESPN FPI has the us starting at 13-6 and 4-1 in conference, thanks to a soft opening conference stretch, before finishing the year at 17-14 and 9-9 in conference. That's likely enough for MK to sign Fletcher to a long-term, inexpensive deal.

HOOPS (Early) Candidates USF Men Basketball Head Coaching Job

Don't throw hate at me, it's slow, and I'm finally starting to feel well enough to at least function at 85% so I'm just thinking of random things while watching last Night's Football game between the Ravens at Chargers, the battle of the Harbaugh brothers got me to thinking about head coaches. USF just so happens to have an opening at an important spot and at an important time.

Looks like we are in for another exciting season of CBB as it will be wide open again with some very good teams, great players, and up and coming coaches. That last statement is where USF comes in. I have 3 potential hires for USF to consider that has a chance to continue on the path that the late CAAR had started just over a year ago.

1) Current Interim HC Ben Fletcher
Pros: Fletcher was one of CAAR top assistant coaches for the last 5 seasons between Kennesaw and USF. Coach Fletcher has a familiarity with the culture here at USF, the administration, and with all the current players. Given that he was on staff already, he gets the first and best chance to impress the Administration and donors to make his case that he wants to be the Head Coach going forward, and will have a whole season to show what he is capable of doing. Seems to be genuinely liked by those who know him.

Cons: Ben Fletcher has no prior head coaching experience at any level. Ben Fletcher has no reputation as a bull dog recruiter, even though he has been a part of a decent level of talented players at Kennesaw and at USF. By having no prior experience as a Head coach, Ben Fletcher has not done anything outside of practice courts and player drills that a Head coach has to do, like interacting with administrators, donors, media, and all other ambassador like duties that the University requires of their coaches. Ben Fletcher does not have a track record to sell his vision on the future of USF hoops to prospects, administrators, or fans just yet.

2) Tom Crean
Pros: Large profile and Big reputation as a Head Coach. Known as Tom Izzo's best assistant coach that became a Head coach, Crean spent 4 seasons with the future HoF head coach at Michigan State. Been a Head coach at 3 high majors, Marquette, Indiana, and Georgia. Elite recruiter and talent evaluation that has helped Crean have a reputation of getting players to the NBA, thar includes Dwayne Wade, Steve Novak, Wesley Matthews, Victor Oladipo, Cody Zeller, and Anthony Edwards. Would bring instant credibility to the University of South Florida and be the highest profile head coach ever. Crean runs a high pace motion offense with lots of set plays and teaches proper fast breaking principles and pressure defense. Tom Crean Lives in Tampa or near Tampa so he would be at home. It is believed that Tom Crean has the fire in the belly again, that maybe if the right opportunity came he would get back into coaching. Crean should be extra energized to keep CAAR dreams alive for USF while being home at the same time. Should be able to entice all the top 100 level talent in the Tampa area to stay home. Would be able to raise more money for the program based on his profile alone. If he wins USF, he would not have a desire to seek a higher profile job.

Cons: 58 years old and has been out of coaching for a few years. Does the fire still burn?

3) Antoine Pettway
Pros: High Ceiling! Known as a tireless worker as a player at Alabama where he went from being a walk on an academic scholarship to earning an athletic scholarship, to being the starting PG on some exciting Crimson Tide basketball teams. Became an assistant coach on Alabama's staff starting with Anthony Grant and ending with Coach Nate Oaks for 12 years after spending 2 years as an assistant coach on the staff at Jacksonville State. Pettway quickly earned the reputation as an ACE recruiter and helped bring in and develop 8 NBA players. Pettway took over for CAAR at Kennesaw after he became the Head Coach at USF. Even after getting a late start and having to replace many of KSU best players, CAP recruited several young players including convincing a kid that was headed to Alabama to follow him. Pettway really showed his ability to recruit this past off-season by signing the #27th ranked class to play at Kennesaw. Pettway continues to prove that he is more than just a recruiter, despite having one of the youngest teams in the nation, his team just defeated a very talented #24 ranked Rutgers that features what many believe will be the #1 player that will be drafted in the upcoming NBA, Ace Bailey. Pettway and CAAR developed a strong relationship and he has dedicated this Kennesaw season in honor of CAAR. Pettway does a lot of the same things and interactions with fans that CAAR was so good at. Pettway is only 42 years old. If Pettway is successful at USF, he will likely be the Head Coach for a long time with only Alabama being able to lure him away which is not going to have an opening for years to come.

Cons: Timing. If ADMK is to get Pettway he will have to get him after the season, before his star gets too bright and large. CAAR had 1 winning season at KSU and the timing was perfect for USF, because they would not have gotten him any other time. Could the timing for USF to go shop at Kennesaw be lining up again?

South Florida at Loyola-Chicago (-9.5)

USF is 1- 7 ATS, including 0-5 on the road/neutral locations, this season while Loyola-Chicago is 7-0 to start the season and covered 3 of their last 4. The Ramblers rank #68 in OER and #17 in DER. Loyola-Chicago can defend and is strong on the offensive and defensive glass (ranks #43 in rebound percentage). This is the toughest opponent the Bulls have faced since the opener against Florida.

Pick: Loyola-Chicago -9.5 with a lean to Loyola-Chicago -5 (1st Half)

So, If Byron Brown Leaves, What Does It Really Mean?

Would Brown leave because he is actually this severely wanted QB, or is he just tired of the way the offense is being ran? Some here will want to say it's a talent issue, but next year will be year three. Some will say it's a scheme issue?

Is there a manner here to have a real discussion and can we open our minds just a little?

Personally I feel Brown will take the easy way out and bolt, something of the "God is good" and move on to becoming a backup somewhere else. I am seriously concerned about how poorly our QB's are taught to throw the ball, how little our WR coaches understand getting open is not always about speed, but route running etc.

Our scheme has seriously began to decline to where it wouldn't really use the word "scheme" any longer.

CAG is a good guy, but maybe his problem was coming into USF with a preconceived idea of running a certain offense rather than trying to do something with the talent you have.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING USF NSD Primer

So here is the latest ahead of NSD on Wednesday

He will announce at 1pm, down to UCF and USF. UCF has the edge here due to what the AD told him on his OV after they got rid of Gus.

Down to Louisville and USF, he pissed off Brohm when he committed to UCF the first time. He has not told either school what he is doing yet.

I think USF wins this one, it has been a long process.

He won't be signing with a FBS school, likely a JUCO situation.

A CB target for USF will announce between USF, Georgia State and Georgia Southern tomorrow, I expect USF to win this one.

I thought Nocco was going to USF, but he visited Clemson and will punt on signing this week and will make his decision in Feb.

There is at least one big surprise coming tomorrow, a fun flip.

USF Football Adds 25 New Bulls On First Day of the NCAA Early Signing Period

Bulls class ranked the second-highest outside the autonomous four conferences by Rivals

TAMPA, FLA., DEC. 4, 2024 – Head coach Alex Golesh and the South Florida Football staff announced the addition of 25 new Bulls in a 2025 Signing Class that for the second-straight year was ranked near the top of the American Athletic Conference as the NCAA Early Signing Period began Wednesday.

For the second-straight year, USF’s 2025 Class was ranked among the very best among all programs outside the autonomous four conferences by Rivals, 247Sports and On3. As of the late afternoon on Wednesday, Rivals ranked the Bulls class second in The American and second among all programs outside of the autonomous four conferences, one year after posting the top class in both, and ahead of eight autonomous conference programs.

On Wednesday, USF announced the addition of 23 high school student-athletes, one junior college transfer and one Australian punter. The NCAA transfer portal, from which the Bulls are expected to add several players, opens on Dec. 9.

“This is the first class where we have had two full years to recruit and go through two full years of a cycle, so we’re really happy,” Golesh said. “I think last year’s class proved to be what people talked about it being – which was the top Group of Five class in the country and a top 50 class. I think this one when it is all said and done, is going to end up being in the same exact vein.

“I think what we have done through the last year is narrowed in on the guys that we feel like can come in and make an impact certainly right away, but guys that fit totally what we are trying to build here, fit what the school is, fit what we are looking for in football players – which is really tough, really smart, really competitive guys that play for elite high school programs, that play for elite high school coaches, that know how to work and know how to help build.”

In the Class of 2025, the Bulls added players from eight states and Washington, D.C., as well as from Canada and Australia. Ten signees hail from the state of Florida, five from Georgia, two from Ohio and one each from Texas, Mississippi, Maryland, Indiana and Rhode Island.

On offense, USF added 11 players, including quarterback Locklan Hewlett (6-1, 175/St. Augustine, Fla.) who has thrown for more than 5,000 yards and 47 touchdowns while leading St. Augustine High School to back-to-back Florida Class 3S state championship game appearances.

The Bulls added five offensive linemen. Among those is 6-5, 310-pound Coffeyville CC transfer Khalil Walker, the lone junior college member of the class, and Tampa native Gerrick Gordon Jr. (6-4, 290/Reddick, Fla.), a late flip to the Bulls class. Collin Bellomy (6-7, 270/Powder Springs, Ga.), Khalil Collins (6-1, 288/Moultrie, Ga.) and Caleb Harris (6-4, 260/Miami, Fla.) also join the Bulls’ offensive line.

USF added a pair of tight ends in Tayte Crable (6-5, 215/Massillon, Ohio) and Brandon Kubay (6-3, 225/Manitoba, Canada), and a pair of running backs in Chase Garnett (5-9, 202/Fort Worth, Texas), who ran for more than 3,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in his final two seasons playing for a state championship winning team, and Tray Kinkle (5-11, 185/Holly Springs, Miss.), who ran for 1,325 yards and 13 touchdowns in his final year and won a Mississippi state 100-meter championship in track.

The Bulls also added three receivers in Jeremiah Koger (6-3, 190/Baltimore, Md.), whose St. Frances Academy team earned a No. 1 ranking in Maryland and No. 8 nationally, Kory Pettigrew (6-1, 180/Kathleen, Ga.), whose Perry High School team won a Georgia state championship, and Christian Neptune (5-11, 180/Cantonment, Fla.), who tallied more than 1,700 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns in his career.

On defense, USF added three defensive linemen, including Eli Jones (6-3, 245/Venice, Fla.), who has tallied 108 tackles, 9.0 tackles for loss, three sacks in his senior year, Brooks Williams Jr. (6-6, 220/Port Saint Lucie, Fla.), who had 57 tackles and five sacks as a senior, and Marcus Williams (6-2, 275/Valdosta, Ga.), who logged 93 tackles, 29.0 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks as a senior.

Three linebackers also joined the Bulls. DeAngelo Bowden (6-0, 215/Washington, D.C.), who led his league in sacks, and Gavin Leach (6-2, 205/Newburgh, Ind.), who posted 100 tackles and 10 tackles for loss in nine games his senior season, and Christian Smith (6-3, 230/Marietta, Ga.), who posted 58 tackles, eight tackles for loss, four sacks, and four forced fumbles as a senior.

The Bulls added five players in the secondary, including Jermichael Gillis (6-1, 170/Lakeland, Fla.), who was a big part of back-to-back state championship teams for the Lakeland High School and helped lead the Dreadnaughts to a No. 2 ranking in Florida and back to the 2024 state semifinals. He was joined by Jeremiah Jones (6-0, 185/Riverview, Fla.), who had a program-record five interceptions as a senior, Gavin Jenkins (6-2, 170/Lake Butler, Fla.), a two-way player at cornerback and wide receiver at Union County High School, Herlin Perry Jr. (5-11, 165/East Providence, R. I.), and Jabari Smith (5-11, 155/Orlando, Fla.), a two-way player at Wekiva High School who posted 218 tackles and 828 all-purpose yards on his career.

The Bulls also continued their string of Australian punters, adding 6-2, 195-pound Luke Goater from Melbourne, Australia. The 24-year-old played in multiple Australian Rules Football leagues and was developed as a punter by ProKick Australia.

USF is expected to welcome as many as three quarters of the early signing class to join the team as early enrollees in January, and as many as eight are expected to join the team in bowl practices ahead of USF’s 12th bowl game appearance in the Hawai‘i Bowl on Dec. 24 in Honolulu, Hawai‘i.

HOOPS Stetson at South Florida (-15)

Over/under set at 151.5. This is not the same Stetson team that made the NCAAT last season. They are 1-6 with their only win coming against NAIA New College of Florida. 5 of their 6 losses are by 15 points or more.

Tha Hatters come in with an OER rank of #283 and a DER ranknof #349, while USF comes in at #126 and #225, respectfully. This will likely be the worst defense the Bulls will play outside of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, which is dead last in DER and who the Bulls beat by 16 earlier in the year.

USF is 1-6 ATS this year which gives me some pause but this is around the time of year we saw the Bulls find their identity and get rolling. They should be able to limit Stetson' second change opportunities and find enough space to get to tbe room offensively.

Pick: South Florida -7.5 (1st Half)

HOOPS USF Men’s Basketball Battles for Gritty Win Against Stetson

Jayden Reid has a career night as South Florida remains undefeated at home for the 2024-25 season

TAMPA, Fla. (December 3, 2024) – The University of South Florida men’s basketball team returned to the Yuengling Center for an in-state contest with Stetson on Tuesday. The Bulls (5-3) defeated the Hatters (1-7) behind a career performance by Jayden Reid.

Reid recorded a career-high 23 points, his fourth game in double figures this season. He knocked down a career-high four 3-pointers. He has led the team in scoring for the last three games. De’Ante Green finished with a season-best 13 points, one shy of tying a career-high. Kobe Knox scored in double digits for the fifth time this season with 12 points. The Bulls are 13-1 all-time when Knox posts a double-digit scoring performance. South Florida extended its streak to 28 games with at least 25 rebounds and 10 assists.

The Hatters scored the game’s first points, but Reid outscored Stetson 5-4, and Kasen Jennings added a 3-pointer to give South Florida the 8-4 lead at the first media timeout. Brandon Stroud dove on the ground for a loose ball on the defensive end, which led to the transition 3-pointer for Jennings.

The Bulls and Hatters battled for the next 4:30. Reid and Green combined for nine points, Reid five and Green four, as USF held a 17-11 lead at the second media timeout. South Florida started to pick up the defensive intensity, which led to multiple transition baskets. Knox poked the ball away from the Stetson. CJ Brown collected the loose ball and passed it to Knox for the two-handed slam. South Florida held a 21-18 lead with 7:21 left in the opening stanza.

The two sides continued to battle in a back-and-forth effort for the remainder of the first half. Reid hit a buzzer-beater 3-pointer as South Florida outscored Stetson 14-11 and took a 35-29 lead into the break.

Reid scored 13 points at the break, including a 3-for-4 effort from 3-point range. USF notched eight steals in the first half, which is one shy of tying a season game-high nine steals. The Bulls forced 10 turnovers and limited their turnovers to five.

Stetson opened the second half outscoring South Florida 9-7, but the Bulls still held a 42-38 lead. USF answered with a 15-8 run to extend its lead to 57-46. During that stretch, Reid found Green for a two-handed dunk.

Brown recorded a steal and took it the distance for an easy dunk to start a 10-4 run for the Bulls. South Florida held a 67-50 lead with just under eight minutes left to play.

The Hatters went on an 11-0 run and cut the Bulls’ lead to 68-61 with 2:01 left in regulation. The two sides combined for 17 points in the final two minutes. Stetson ended the game outscoring South Florida 11-6, but the early USF lead was too much to overcome. The Bulls claimed a 74-72 victory.

South Florida tallied a season-best 12 steals. It was the first time the Bulls recorded 10 or more steals since March 15, 2024, against East Carolina in the AAC Tournament. The South Florida bench outscored the Stetson bench 25-12. The Bulls capitalized on 25 points off turnovers. USF finished the game shooting 44.4 percent from the field and 34.8 percent from 3-point range.

Jamille Reynolds collected a game-high nine rebounds. It was his sixth game leading the team in rebounds. He added two more blocked shots to move his season total to 10. Reid dished out a season-high eight assists. Knox and Jennings tied for a game-high with three steals each.

Mehki Ellison led Stetson with 19 points. Josh Massey added 18 points, while Tristan Gross finished with 11. Abramo Canka and Treyton Thompson tied with a team-best eight rebounds. Massey paced the Hatters with four assists.
