HOOPS USF Men’s Basketball Wins Thrilling Comeback Against Tulsa

The Bulls are 14-0 at home when Kobe Knox scores in double figures.



TAMPA, Fla. (January 18, 2025) – The University of South Florida men’s basketball team utilized a 19-2 run at the end of the game to complete the comeback against Tulsa on Saturday in the Yuengling Center. CJ Brown recorded a career-high in points as four USF players finished in double figures in the 63-56 victory.



With 5:05 left in the game, the Golden Hurricane held a 10-point lead, 54-44. Back-to-back layups cut the deficit to six. Jayden Reid and Brown accounted for three free throws and closed the gap to three points. Brandon Stroud drove into the paint and utilized a running floater, making it a one-point game.



The Bulls collected a defensive rebound and pushed the ball up the court. After a contested layup was missed, Kobe Knox was there for the putback layup. Knox gave USF its first lead since 8:27 in the first half. On the next defensive possession, Brown intercepted a pass and took it the length of the court for a layup. He was fouled on the play and converted the and-1. The Bulls held a 58-54 lead with 59.9 seconds left on the clock.



Knox delivered the dagger with a 3-pointer that put USF up 61-56 with 25 seconds left to play. On the next defensive possession, Stroud picked the pocket of a Golden Hurricane player. The ball landed in the hands of Brown, who dribbled it down the court and put the exclamation point on the game with an emphatic slam dunk.



The Bulls improved to 10-8 overall and 3-2 in American Athletic Conference play. The Golden Hurricane fell to 8-10 and 2-3 conference games.



The game started as a back-and-forth battle. The Bulls scored seven unanswered points and took a 13-7 lead with 11:35 left in the first half. De’Ante Green accounted for five points during the USF run, while Kobe Knox recorded a highlight dunk in transition.



The Bulls continued to pressure the Golden Hurricane. Jimmie Williams recorded a steal that led to a Knox alley-oop. South Florida extended its lead to 22-13 with under eight minutes left until the break.



Tulsa turned the tables late in the first half and held South Florida without a field goal for the final 4:20 of play. The Golden Hurricane utilized a 13-1 run and took a 30-25 lead into the break. The Golden Hurricane shot 42.3 percent from the field, while the Bulls shot 32.3 percent in the first half.



The second half started like the game started, physical and a battle. Brown scored six of the team’s points. Midway through the second stanza, Tulsa held a 39-35 lead. The Bulls were held without a field goal for five minutes until Brown knocked down a jumper with 5:12 left in regulation.



Brown led all scorers with a career-high 16 points, including six of the final 19 points for the Bulls. He added five rebounds and a game-high four steals. Knox finished with 12 points, one assist, and one rebound. Green chipped in with 11 points and brought down a game-high eight rebounds. He added an assist and a block. Reid finished with 11 points, five rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Jamille Reynolds and Stroud both finished with seven rebounds. Reynolds blocked a game-high three shots.



The Bulls finished the game with more points off turnovers (20-8), points in the paint (34-30), second-chance points (13-7), fastbreak points (18-10), and bench points (29-12). The South Florida defense held Dwon Odom to nine points. Odom came into the game averaging 13.4 points. The Bulls were strong on the glass and outrebounded the Golden Hurricane 46-39. The 46 rebounds are the second-most this season.



Justin Amadi led the Golden Hurricane with 14 points and seven rebounds. Keaston Willis added a 12-point performance. Odom dished out a game-high 10 assists.
