Press Release from USF
TAMPA, JULY 1, 2015 – Head coach Orlando Antigua announced the signing of Penn State transfer Geno Thorpe to a financial aid agreement on Wednesday.
Thorpe played in all 34 games for the Nittany Lions last season as a sophomore while making 17 starts. The 6-3 guard from Pittsburgh, Pa., averaged 8.7 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 24.3 minutes per game while serving as the team’s top free throw shooter at 83.9 percent (94-112). Known as a fearless competitor, Thorpe was generally regarded as the Lions’ best on-ball defender and was very good in transition both as a passer and a finisher. Thorpe made his presence known on the defensive end even as a freshman while averaging 3.2 points per game.
Due to NCAA transfer rules, Thorpe must sit out the upcoming 2015-16 season. He will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.
“Geno will be a great fit here at USF,” said Antigua. “His maturity and defensive ability will be an asset for our program. Having a guy like Geno in our practices this season will help improve our team and help him to prepare for the following season.”
Thorpe was a consensus three-star recruit out of Shaler High School and averaged better than 26 points per game in his final prep season. Thorpe was a two-time Pennsylvania Class AAAA first-team selection and chose Penn State over offers from Wisconsin, Pittsburgh, Seton Hall, Kansas State and Rutgers.
