Jalen Haynes, a power forward who played his sophomore season at ETSU last season and averaged 14.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, took an official visit to USF over the weekend. Haynes was the second-leading scorer and second-leading rebounder for ETSU.

Haynes, who spent his freshman year at Virginia Tech, is a second time transfer and will need a waiver to be eligible for the 2023-24 season. He has family in the Bay Area so if Haynes wants in and can convince the NCAA that returning to Florida is necessary to be close to family, he might get the waiver. Haynes attended Dillard HS (Ft. Lauderdale) before transferring to Montverde Academy for his senior season. He played for the Montverde post grad team. Officially known as the Montverde Academy CBD (Center for Basketball Development) team.

The 6 foot 8 inch, 255-pounder notched four double-doubles last season. He finished his sophomore year strong averaging 18.3 points over the last 13 games of the season.

Competition for Haynes is tough. He has offers from LSU, Georgia and Mississippi State. He is trying to squeeze in a visit to Mississippi State next week before the dead period begins on May 18. Ole Miss came down last Friday to meet with him. Seton Hall’s head coach reached out to him recently, as did a coach from Iowa State, to set up a Zoom and start the relationship building.

I have been asking around about combo-guard Dante Oliver, the son of Bulls assistant coach Desmond Oliver, for a while and I finally got some insight into what is going on with him. Oliver has several schools recruiting him now, at one point in his recruitment he was hearing from some MM+ (mid-major plus) programs but that isn’t the case at this point in time. No decisions have been made yet but I was told to not be surprised if Oliver preps for the 2023-24 season and uses the time to get stronger which, the thinking goes, would have a positive impact on his recruitment.

Another thing I learned about Dante Oliver is that the previous USF staff liked him and was monitoring him when Oliver committed to ETSU.
