For some that don't know, UF and FSU receive about $12 million a year in extra funding from the state. they meet the requirements of the Preeminent State Research program.
USF currently meets 9 out of the 12 but needs 11 to be a full member. The state has designated a new status called "emerging preeminence" and USF is the only university to attain this status, which means an additional $5 million in funding.
Considering that the last 3 incoming freshman classed had a 4.0 or higher average GPA, we should meet a 10th criteria by years end.
It's a feather in our cap and a bit of BS at the same time considering that this funding is supposedly for research schools and we smoke the hell out of FSU in that category... So they used stupid measurements like endowment to keep us out. At the time that FSU got in, their endowment was barely above the level needed. USF is about $80 million short... If we could raise it, that would be our 11th criteria and in the state boards eyes, we would be equal to the big 2.
