KEEP AN EYE ON...: When asked Thursday which young linebacker has stood out this preseason, both starters -- redshirt junior MLB Auggie Sanchez and senior WLB Nigel Harris -- singled out redshirt freshman WLB Nico Sawtelle.
"I'll be the first one to say it right here, that he's gonna be a big-time linebacker at USF," Sanchez said.
Sawtelle, 20, totaled nearly 300 tackles and 23 sacks his final two seasons at Jensen Beach High, earning third-team Class 6A all-state honors as a senior. With Nick Holman -- the backup weakside 'backer after spring drills -- having transferred, Sawtelle and freshman Andre Polk Jr. are among those who have logged reps behind Harris.
"He's there, but he still has to learn the playbook a little more and just kind of that type deal, learn how to study film and stuff like that," Sanchez said. "But just pure instincts, pure just playing football, he just knows how to play and he's gonna be real good for us."
