When it comes to USF sports. Last year I had an absolute BLAST keeping up with USF spring sports. Looks like I'm going to have just as much fun, if not more, this year. I don't even think that's legal.
Seriously though, USF baseball finished off the weekend beating Liberty 6-5 and taking the series 2-1. Great job by the Bulls! I wasn't able to keep up with the live post but looks like we had some bats show up and Coach moved Villar out of the lineup and placed Michael Koenig in instead. How did Koenig respond? With an RBI TRIPLE for his first career hit. That made it 1-1 and the Chatfield comes up right behind him and gives an RBI double to make the game 2-1. We never gave up the lead after that. That was some big time play from the freshmen.
Then we get to women's basketball AND WELCOME BACK LAURA FERREIRA!! God I've missed her and the team has missed her. She came out guns blazing and put up 19 points. It was a very close game and Memphis kept it close. Memphis was hitting around 60% of their shots but USF was cleaning the glass, getting second chance points and creating turnovers so we kept the lead. They ended up pulling away in the four quarter and shut down any attempt at a come back. We had 5 players score in double digits and Jenkins nearly went 20 points and 20 rebounds. This team seems to be clicking now at just the right time. However, Laksa went down with an ankle injury towards the end of the game and had to put ice on it. We are only a few games out from AAC tournament play so we will need her badly. I'm not sure how available she will be. We also finish out the regular season against Tulsa and UCONN...BOTH teams we could use her but I think Fernandez will keep her in the bench to get healthy.
Now how about our men's tennis team! They have been on FIRE lately. They have already taken out 31st ranked FSU and 30th ranked LSU this year as well as 23rd ranked Minnesota. Then we come into this past week and beat the pants off San Diego TWICE in one week. San Diego is ranked 16th in the nation. Damn it's been fun keeping up with them. Cid is an absolute STUD, I think he's the best men's tennis player in USF history, and Peter Beltran has been playing nicely this year. Justin Roberts isn't quite having the year he finished off on last year but I think he'll gain traction. Also, Ignacio "Nacho" Gonzalez-Muniz has been having a great year in doubles.
And then how about the freaking men's golf team! These guys are ANIMALS and Steve Bradley is one hell of a coach. We have now taken the SunTrust Gator Invitational TWO YEARS IN A ROW!! We took it last year and now we took it this year shooting 22-under. The next closest team was 8 shots behind us. Rigel Fernandes is continuing where he left off in the NCAA tournament last year and he won the individual champion at 13-under. Good for him. And not only did we win but we broke a school record! WE BEAT THE SCORE LAST YEAR BY 17 STROKES!! That allowed us to break the school's 54-hole record. That is just unreal. The amount of clutch golf that was played...we were down by one stroke heading into the last day and every single player in our starting 5 hit in the 60's. No one shot over 70. Amazing!
I can't wait to see what else happens this spring! GO BULLS!!
