I really like the guy. He is engaging and enthusiastic. He talks about the right things, like building a winning culture, work ethic and discipline. He has a coaching pedigree well-suited to being successful at a mid-major program. It’s much better to have a coach with a high ceiling than one who might get you to 7-5/8-4 and a lame bowl every year. But the fact remains, USF is 1-14 against FBS opponents on Scott’s watch. Four games remain this season, and three are against some of the toughest teams on the schedule. Recruiting does not appear to be going well, and that’s supposed to be a Scott strength. When will the measurable improvement come?

Has there been enough improvement to carry momentum into the offseason? Special teams play has been solid. The defense has been mostly abysmal, save for some individual highlights. The offense has been spotty – albeit, while showing potential in the second half against BYU and in setting two school records against Temple. McClain was a steal in recruiting and could develop into one of the conference’s top quarterbacks if he gains strength and stays healthy. (I actually agree with Scott’s decision to give Marsh a full one-game trial vs. East Carolina, because his arm strength is intriguing.) Mangham has been a terrific pickup, and Battie and Joyner both seem a step faster. The offensive line is confounding, because at times they’re pretty good at run blocking and at other times they’re a collective swinging door.

Scott is clearly learning on the job. That’s OK as long as he actually learns and is willing to make some tough calls with his staff. Fans are focused on the OCS and conference realignment. None of that matters if you can’t beat Tulsa, East Carolina and Tulane.
