TAMPA, JUNE 6, 2017 – USF Director of Athletics Mark Harlan has been voted Chair of the Athletic Director Executive Committee for the American Athletic Conference. He will serve a two-year term as committee chair.

Harlan, who celebrated his three-year anniversary leading the USF Athletics program in March, has been an active and influential leader both in the conference and in the national NCAA structure since his arrival at USF in March of 2014. He previously served as Vice Chair of the Athletic Director Executive Committee and helped shape The American’s strategic plan, which was unveiled this spring.

Harlan was appointed to the NCAA Division I Competition Oversight Committee in 2015, which legislates competition matters and administration of championships for all sports other than football and men’s and women’s basketball. This year, he accepted an appointment to the NCAA Division I Council Transfer Working Group, which is studying Division I transfer rules to consider where improvements can be made.

“It’s an honor to be able to work with my very talented colleagues in shaping both conference and NCAA governance with the ultimate goal of optimizing the experience for all student-athletes,” Harlan said. “We have such a great example here at USF with Dr. Genshaft’s leadership and her service as the first woman to chair the NCAA Division I Board of Directors. I am happy for the privilege to represent USF and our nearly 500 student-athletes, coaches and staff.”

Since Harlan’s arrival, USF has won 11 American Athletic Conference championships, including a record four in 2016-17. The Bulls sent 10 programs into national postseason competition in 2016-17 and saw nine programs gain a national top 25 ranking during their season, including the football team, which posted a school-record 11-2 mark and finished ranked No. 19 in the nation.

The Bulls have also excelled in the classroom, posting a program record 86 percent Graduation Success Rate in the last reporting and a record cumulative grade-point average of 3.085 for all student-athletes in 2015-16. USF will see over 100 student-athletes earn their degree in 2016-17 after completion of the summer term. The Bulls also posted nearly 4,000 hours of service in the community department-wide in 2015-16.
