Yesterday, a friend of mine was hired as the women's basketball coach at Georgia Southern. Kip Drown was the coach at Georgia Southwestern (GSW) when I was a professor there 15 years ago. A former USF men's hoops assistant coach had become a head coach and he asked me if I would drive down to Bainbridge, GA and watch a player that he was recruiting so I could share my opinion of him. I got messed up on the start time of the game and got to Bainbridge way too early. The girl's were just about to tip off and their game was before the boy's game. Well, I paid to get in so I watched the girl's game even though I was really there to see the boys play. I didn't know much about girl's hoops back in those days, but I noticed this girl for Bainbridge that seemed to be a pretty complete player. I circled her name in the program and thought, "I'll mention her to Coach Drown at GSW and see if he is recruiting her." Now mind you, GSW was an NAIA school at the time. And I'm thinking this girl could probably do well there.
When I got back to campus on Monday I called up Coach Drown and told him about this girl I saw play. He patiently listened to me describe her game and her attributes, and then he asked me, "What is her name?" When I told him the name he chuckled and said, "Doug, she signed in November with Auburn." I just laughed and said, "Well Coach, at least you know I didn't try to talk you into a crappy player." Happy April Fool's Day and good luck to Coach Kip Drown at Georgia Southern.
