USF coaches will be fanning out across the country this week for the final live period of the recruiting calendar year. A dead period begins on Monday, followed by a quiet period that runs from Aug. 1 - Sept. 8.

The events held this week are called NCAA College Basketball Academy and there is one for each region. In their incredible wisdom, kids from Florida must attend the Academy in Phoenix, AZ (not Houston, or Champaign, Illinois or Storrs, Connecticut (UConn was just hit with NCAA violations but they get to host an academy? Go figure).

Brian Gregory is in Illinois to start but will travel to the other locations. The rest of the staff will scout players at different Academy sites.

The NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Recruiting Calendar runs from August 1 to July 31. Thanks to the Commission on College Basketball, a.k.a. the Rice Commission and chaired by Condoleezza Rice, massive changes were made to the recruiting calendar for the months of June and July. According to the NCAA website, These changes were made in an effort to provide "more opportunities during the summer for NCAA coaches to observe prospective student-athletes in a scholastic environment."

It also led to the creation of the NCAA College Basketball Academy. These camps are conducted by the NCAA and member schools/conferences.
