WKU 45 USM 28. USM was leading 21-7 and WKU just kept chipping away and they owned the second half.
There are 23 seniors on WKU’s team and 23 juniors. I would imagine at least 10 of the juniors are redshirt juniors. So CWT will be facing probably 30 players he recruited. That’s is after subtracting possible transfer ins and JUCOs. It has to be a weird feeling for CWT.
QB Brandon Doughty isn’t real athletic, but he’s a gamer. At 6’3” 220 lbs he has enough size to see the field and he will stand and make the throw even when he knows he’s going to take a hit. He has completed 356 of 497 passes (71.6%), for 4594 yards, 45 TDs and 7 INTs in 13 games. He has a very live arm and he can make all the throws. He’ll run if he has to, but he’s primarily a drop back passer. He even caught a TD on a flea flicker. He spreads the ball around. His receivers are a veteran group and they all have good size. WKU has 5 receivers who have caught for over 547 yards and accounted for 42 of Doughty’s 45 TD passes.
The go to guy is Taywan Taylor 6’1” 195 lb Jr 79 catches for 1363 yards 17.3 ypc and 17 TDs. He’ll be playing on Sundays next year. He runs great routes, is very deceptive, has strong hands and tracks the ball unbelievably. Taylor is tough as nails and has a high football IQ. He opens things up for the other receivers and they aren’t chopped liver. The WKU running game averages 158 yards a game and the passing game average 362 for 520 total yards offense a game.
It will come down to who’s big nasties prevail. Obviously WKU is a good blocking team for the run and a great blocking team for the pass. If our D-line can put a lot of heat on Doughty that could swing the game our way. Don’t look for us to win it easy. If we don’t go in totally focused, we will lose.
WKU is 11-2 and CUSA champs. They lost 38-35 at (6-6) Indiana and 48-20 at (8-3) LSU. The Hilltoppers opened up with a 14-12 victory at Vandy. Vandy (4-8) finished the season with the 30th ranked defense in the nation, giving up only 350 yards a game. Bowling Green Ky is 65 miles north of Nashville on I-65, so it’s kind of like Pitt and WVU in their back yard brawl.
WKU beat Marshall (9-3) 49-28, USM (9-4) 45-28, La Tech (8-4) 41-38 and MTSU (7-5) 58-28. WKU’s competition was 73-73 (.500). USF’s competition was 66-77 (.461).
WKU ranks 4th nationally in scoring offense @ 44.2 ppg and 54th nationally in scoring defense @ 25.2 ppg. WKU ranks 10th nationally in total offense yards @ 520 ypg and 62nd nationally in yards given up @ 394 ypg.
USF ranks 42nd nationally in scoring offense @ 33.5 ppg and 23rd nationally in scoring defense @ 21.1 ppg. USF ranks 43rd nationally in total offensive yards @ 428 ypg and 38th nationally in yards given up @ 361 ypg.
I wouldn’t be surprised if WKU comes into the game ranked.
GO BULLS !!!!!
