I wanted to post this yesterday but I'm just now getting around to it.
Damn proud of our men's golf team. Not only are they ranked 18th in the nation under new head coach Steven Bradley (another fantastic hire by Harlan and I called it when he made it), but they just won the conference championship yesterday. These boys just blew everyone away and swept the course with them. And it wasn't even close. Not only did we win overall, we also won the individual title with Ryan Fricker who shot 11 under for the entire tournament, two strokes ahead of Bryson Dechambeau of SMU. And he did this at Black Diamond...BLACK DIAMOND!! At one point, Fricker had 10 birdies and one eagle...nine strokes under par through 30 holes. Then 12 under par through 48 holes...six holes away from the championship. Crazy!
Not only did we have the individual title winner, we had two other players who also finished in the top 10. Trey Valentine tied for third and Chase Koepka came in 7th. Rigel Fernandes and Claudio Correa tied for 14th and 18th respectively. We almost had 4 players in the top 10 but one fell out in the final round.
By the end of the second round, we already had a 16 shot lead over the next closest team. We eventually ended the tournament 27 under, 13 shots ahead of the next closest team, 29th ranked SMU.
Like I said about our men's tennis team, our men's golf team goes SUPREMELY underappreciated as well. Men's tennis has won back to back conference titles the last two years and now our men's golf has won two titles in three years. Unbelievable. Since joining the American, USF has claimed 5 titles already, mostly due to these two programs. They are great. Also, four out of the five USF players who played in the championship yesterday have won an individual championship this season but all 5 have at least one individual championship in their career.
Congrats to this team and congrats to coach Steven Bradley for winning his first USF title in his first year here!
