Temple showed up in Dallas with a big hangover from the 24-20 loss to Notre Dame last weekend. They were not only mentally down but they were bodies were sore too. They had left it all on the field against the Irish. Their best RB Jahad Thomas didn't start because he was dinged up. Enter High Point NC freshman Jager Gardiner who ran for a 94 yard TD to give the Owls the early lead. When I tell you that kid is fast....BELIEVE IT !!!
The Ponies were down 14-0 when they began to assert themselves and took a 17-14 lead. Given Temple's obvious state of mind after the Notre Dame loss, I imagine it is hard to get up for a 1-7 win team. PJ Walker hits Romond Deloatch for a 16 yard TD with 24 ticks left in the half. Temple 21-17 at the half.
Temple scores first in the second half to go up 28-17, then SMU scores to make it 28-24 Temple. Temple scores 10 unanswered point to go up 38-24 entering the 4th quarter. The Ponies come back when Matt Davis hits Jeremiah Gaines for a 30 yard TD to bring the Ponies within 7 at 38-31.
PJ Walker, who played a brilliant game, then hits freshman WR Ventrell Bryant on a 75 yard TD to put Temple ahead 45-31. Matt Rhule was incensed with Bryant for excessive celebration and made him do push ups on the sidelines after the score. At this point you think Temple has the game put away......WRONGO !!!!
Temple gets pinned back deep near their own end zone and is forced to punt. RB Nick Sharga holds in the end zone on the play and SMU is awarded a safety. Score Temple 45-33. Temple Kicks from the 20 and SMU's Braedon West returns he ball 80 yards for a TD with 8:02 left in the game. Temple 45-40.
SMU's D stops the Owls and forces a punt. The OWLs stop SMU in their tracks. PJ Walker runs 36 yards for a TD and then throws for a 2 point conversion. Temple 53-40.
Matt Davis who had a very good game up to this point threw his only pick of the game and the Owl's Sean Chandler returned it 41 yard for a TD with 55 seconds left on the clock. Final Score Temple 60-40 over SMU.
It was a rollercoaster game and you thought maybe SMU had a chance, but in the end Temple was just too good.
GO BULLS !!!!!
