The two teams had 2 common opponents, Navy and Temple. Memphis Played Temple in the Liberty Bowl and won 34-27. USF played Temple in Philly and lost 46-30. Memphis played Navy at Annapolis and lost 42-28. USF played Navy at the Ray Jay and won 52-45.
Memphis also lost to Ole Miss earlier in the season (when the rebels were at full strength) 48-28. Memphis v Ole Miss is a rivalry game. This compares to USF’s 55-35 loss to FSU.
Memphis had to face a very good Tulsa team in the Liberty Bowl and lost 59-30. The Bulls haven’t faced a Conference team (not including common opponents) of the caliber of Tulsa. Memphis took it out on SMU the following week by going to Dallas and smoking an improved Pony team 51-7.
Since resuming play with Memphis in the AAC, the Bulls are 0-3 versus the Tigers. This Tiger team is physical and they have players that can burn you. For USF to win this game, they have to play much better defense than we have seen thus far in the season.
Memphis Jr QB Riley Ferguson is throwing on a pace to where he’ll be within 200 yards of Paxton Lynch by season’s end. He has a completion % of 63.5. 193-304 2565 yds. 21 TDs 8 Ints. So don’t look for a huge fall off from Paxton Lynch. Our DBs are going to be busy. If we can get middle pressure from the D-line that will help.
The D-line has to rush with caution, because Jr RB Doroland Dorceus (89- 559 yds, 7 TDs) can take it to the house as can his two freshmen running mates Patrick Taylor Jr (57-359, 2 TDs) and scat back Darrell Henderson (56-347, 3 TDs). All three can catch too. Dorceus and Taylor have 1 receiving TD each, but Henderson has 3 receiving TDs to go with his 3 rushing TDs. This guy is dangerous.
Jr WR Anthony Miller (57-924, 16.2 ypc 7 TDs) will be the best WR the Bulls have faced thus far. Miller also runs the jet sweep well and averages 7.6 per carry with 1 TD. Jr WR Phil Mayhue (28-421, 15 ypc, 2 TDs) is good as well. Ferguson has completed passes to 18 different receivers and 7 have over 126 yards, so it’s obvious he reads his progressions well.
This game will be a dog fight. I like our BULL dog in this fight, but they need to man up on defense.
