Roddy Peters scores a team-high 14 points

NEWARK, Del., DEC. 3, 2015 – USF swatted away a season-high 11 shots but couldn’t find its groove on offense in a 67-58 loss at Delaware on Thursday night.

The Bulls fell to 2-6 after limiting Delaware to a season-low 30.9 percent from the field (17-for-55). The Blue Hens (4-2) were able to stay ahead by outrebounding USF, 48-34, and going 29-for-37 from the free throw line.

“We got 11 blocks, but you negate all that defensive effort by not boxing out, letting them get 16 offensive rebounds, and putting them on the line,” head coach Orlando Antigua said.

Roddy Peters was the lone Bull in double figures after scoring of 12 of his team-high 14 points in the second half. Jaleel Cousins and Nehemias Morillo added eight points apiece while Angel Nunez finished with seven points and nine rebounds. Ruben Guerrero grabbed a season-high eight rebounds and scored six points in 20 minutes.

USF blocked nine shots in the first half but trailed most of the way while shooting 22 percent from the field (7-for-31). Nunez led the Bulls with five points and Guerrero started fast with four points and seven rebounds.

Kory Holden hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer on the run to extend Delaware’s lead to 33-19 by the break. The Blue Hens closed the half on an 11-0 run and got four points from Marvin King-Davis, who posted 14 points and 10 rebounds in the opening period. King-Davis finished with 16 points and 18 rebounds.

The Bulls’ defense tightened back up early the second half as Delaware started 2-for-17 from the field. Nunez’s dunk cut USF’s deficit down to single digits with 14:31 remaining and the Bulls heated up from long range. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Morillo made it 41-37 midway through the second half.

“They got those shots off ball movement and he was wide open. Those are the shots that he’s got to take,” Antigua said.

Delaware took the momentum back with a 16-3 run and extended its lead to 57-40 on a Holden jumper with 4:49 remaining. USF shot 51 percent in the second half, but the Blue Hens stayed in control by going 21-for-29 at the free throw line after the break.

Holden finished with a game-high 23 points and Maurice Jeffers added 13 points for Delaware. The Blue Hens are 3-0 at home for the first time since the start of the 2011-12 season.

USF wraps up a two-game road trip at South Carolina on Saturday at 4 p.m. (TV: SEC Network). The Gamecocks (7-0) will look to match their best start in 12 years.

“Frank Martin’s teams are going to compete and it’s going to be a great challenge for us as a team to see what kind of fortitude we have as a team,” Antigua said. “… We have to show some fight. We have to be able to push through some stuff. We have to be able to stay together and disciplined through adversity.
